: Need to re-valve my sway a way's

I picked up some used 2.5 racerunners. I don't know what the valving is, but I do know they havve WAY to much compression damping. Is there anyway I can take them apart, and find out what the valving is? Like by counting the shim packs and such. I would like to know what I have now so as to have a ballpark to start with when I rebuild/valve them.

Thanks!
Beerman.

good luck finding suitable 2,5" springs :flipoff2:

You can most certainly take them apart and count/measure the shim pack. The compression valves are on the piston rod side of the piston, the side with the nut on it is the rebound. If they have never been re-valved, there should be about 5 valve washers that are different diameters, all should be .010" thick. Your options are .008, .010, .012, .015, .018 when you re-valve, also the low speed bleed holes in the piston.

I found them no problem, they are 2.5" wide and about 50 " long.:flipoff2:

I did take one apart. It have 5 shims on both sides. So your saying its the thickness of the 5 shims I need to change?

Yes, the thickness is what you need to change, you can also add/remove washsers but then you run the risk of overstressing and breaking them. You typically go with the same number and diameters of washers and just use a different thickness. You would have to buy some valve washers. If you have an .010" pack, I would buy an .008" pack and just use that or a combination of the two if the .008 is too soft. The rebound will have the same size stack but probably .012" so once you have a few extra valve stacks, you can do both reb and compression.

Thanks Goat!

I plan on replacing the wear band and all the o-rings, oil and seals while I'm at it. Is there a piston or blatter in the res I should replace/service?

Those wear bands are expensive, I would only replace it if is is really worn, if it is gold colored it is worn, but if it still has alot of grey/brown it is still good. There is a floating piston in the reservoir that has an o-ring and a teflon wear band. That wear band should be fine, but I would replace the o-ring. Make sure the floating piston o-ring is a fat one, if it is small like the one in the reservoir ends, you have an old one and SAW will replace it for free. How old are those shocks?

Don't know, but they are real clean. I'll pull a res apart tonight and check it out.
