i'm building a huge mud truck and am looking for more gearing on... of course a budget. i was thinking of running two divorced cases but now i'm toying with the crazy idea of putting something like a sm 465 between my th 400 and my divorced np 200. i don't expect to shift on the fly, so the only concern i have is making some mount that will support the input shaft for the bearing since i won't have a crankshaft for it to fit in. anyone seen this done? any reason why i shouldn't and any recomendations as far as trannys to use? the final question is am i just crazy for such an idea...i think it's been done before...industrial equipment have similar set-ups.

Why not just run dual 465's, I have seen that done before or a nice 205/203 t-case combo?

Supporting the input shaft would be your main problem.. how long is this Huge trucks wheelbase... you are getting long with a set up like that???

i have plenty of room. i'm working on a kaiser m715...fullsize jeep pickup similar to a j30 only militarized, with rockwells. i'm running a 500 caddy so i stuck with the th400 and have the stock divorced np 200. i went with two sm465's i would have to purchase a fly wheel and have a large amount of maching done to the crank, since the cadillac motors never had manuals. the flywheels alone are upwards of 350 bucks. i also liked the auto for the mud: quicker shifts with less backoff on the throttle. how did they support the second tranny in the setup you saw?

You say that you wanna run something stout but are talking about opening a whole can of worms with a dual tranny setup. Just go with the ORD Doubler (www.offroaddesign.com) and be done. All of the work has been done for you and this setup is tried and true. It will take the thrashing you wanna put out. So why reinvent the wheel when you can bolt one on and rock and roll?!?! Good Luck !

That's done on the mud buggies down here all the time. Use a hanger bearing for the input shaft with a sleeve if needed.

as long as you're stackin shit, put a Klune in front of a 203 range box with the ORD Doubler adapter going to an Atlass. It would all be semi bolt on, and you'de have enough shifters to keep you busy for about 10 minutes :D:D

Sure you can do it and it will work fine. i have a friend with dual 465's and 205 in a s10.I also know several people in florida running swamp buggies with 60 inch tires and big blocks running dual 4 speeds, and some running th350 and/or th400 mated to 4 speeds between the transfer case and transmission as well..If you need some info send me your e-mail address and I will hook you up.:D

Hey, I was talking about this exact setup (TH400->SM465->NP205) with a friend a couple of weeks ago. I want the 465 in there for more reduction options than the typical doubler. Like the 715, I have plenty of room and the extra couple of inches is a non-issue. However, the torque multiplication from the TH400 multiplied by the 465s granny low through the 205s low range. Makes me do a Tim Allen impression. 2000 rpms and about 1 mph. With the TH400, a doubler, and my 4.56 gears, I still only have a 45:1 crawl ratio. But with a 465 in there, it becomes 149:1! Even a Toy 4 banger could snap C14 shafts with a ratio like that! LOL!

the cool thing about 2 trannys, is when you put them both in reverse you get an even lower foward gear

My brother's Willys is now sportin a new dual tranny setup ( 2nd time around....... this time the tranny's are Bigger) and it's crammed into a 93" wheelbase:smokin:
oh yeah "dual reverse" is always good for confusing folks when you try to explain it...... " no it's in reverse and we're going forward.... :D "

What trannys did your brother use in his Willys? I really want to do this, but couldn't come up with a feasable 2nd transmission to use that I thought would stand up to the torque. I'm running a mild small block, and was thinking auto trans (prolly 400), 4-speed, then 205. I've kinda given up and am thinking 700 and an ORD doubler, but either way it'll be a while since I'm broke.

Hey........ that's my truck you're talkin about........ well it's an SM420 mated to a T19 and a Dana 20.... ( We are making a HD 32 spline output shaft for the D20 ) 365:1 in first-first low with 4:10 axles:smokin: all sitting behind a throttle body 4.3.....

Cool. Unfortunatly I don't think those trannys would work for me, strength-wise. I'm not running a tremendous amount of power (TBI 350), but I am around 6000 loaded for the trail. Oh, well.
