Finally got the system, just bought one of these:

Only $70, comes with some fantastic noise reduction software, and its puny, no more big old receiver, and no more hum.

Anyone use an external firewire video capture unit? I'm trying to find one that will encode sound decently. I have a pile of CD quality stuff recorded on Super Beta Hi-fi ( in audio only mode, the beta machine uses the entire "bandwidth" of the tape to record the audio tracks!)

I have this and alot of old plain audio tapes to convert. The chitty input on my laptop hums like an sob. I even tried on just battery.

So Brad, did you buy the turntable too?

I want to get the set-up for my Dad for X-mas... should I get both or just the interface?

I already have a good turntable, an old Technics SL-Q2, Quartz Phase locked direct drive with a Stanton 681EEE/S cartridge. But if I didn't, that turntable looks like a great setup.

A couple other things Peter, DAK, aka Drew Kaplan has been around since the early 70s, I had some of his stuff way back when. Also, the cool thing about the way the setup works, you burn an image to your hard drive, unfiltered, then you use the filters that come with the unit to clean up the image. You can either clean up the image or make a new one with the extension on the name of _new, its all in the program. Lots simpler than GoldWave.
