: Roll Cage Question

I built a full cage for my CJ7. It attaches to the floor on drivers and passangers sides. Is this strong enough or do I need to tie it into the frame?:skull: :skull: :skull:

if you have big foot plates and a floor board in perfect condition it should be fine. If you expect it to handle multiple rollls I would attach it to the frame. On mine I just plan to have the foot plate extend over the body mount so the load will be transfered to the frame that way

do you think a piece of steel welded to the frame extending out to the roll cage plate would be sufficient? Then bolt the rollcage plate to the steel with maybe a piece of Poly in between?

Go to the frame...dont risk it cause of money, I would think your safety is more important to you.

I agree but how do I get it to the frame without having it come down in the middle of the drivers seat??

Look at the frame, see how the body mounts to it? Do the samething with the cage.

while on the subject of cages....would it not be safe if you attached the seats to the cage?

We did a full cage in my buddies Zuki to the frame at six points. There are mounts for all six points to correspond with the hoops that come down through the floor. Each mount has a flat surface with 4 bolts just under the body with a 3/16" square rubber pad. They have been angled and braced to meet the hoop mounts above. There are also flat plates at the bottom of the hoops that go on top of the frame and then they bolt together. One hoop is at the windshield with a crossbar over the dash. Another hoop behind the front seats with a crossbar just below shoulder height to attach the harnesses to. And another hoop across the back of the rig. They are all interconnected and crossbraced as well as extra over head bars down the middle. The factory soft top hoop was removed and now the cage is what keeps the top taught. The seats are also integrated into flat steel stock crossbraces and into the cage.

Have you tried talking to FatCity yet? Or TinBender? There are a couple others, but these two I have heeard nothing but the :nuke: stuff about!! Good Luck, Keith

ok, now here's a good question.

Say you build a cage that's only tied to the body. you bolt the seats on to the cage. (no longer mout them to the body) at the foot of each of the 6 legs you have cross bracing so the cage is not depending on the body of the rig for it's rigidity.

Now in that case it would make more sense to me to NOT bolt the cage to the frame. Theory behind that the cage is sufficiently strong by itself, and by having the seats bolted to the cage, in the event of a severe roll over the frame, engine, etc. would be able to peel away from the cage creating less rolling mass.

of course in a roll that bad, if the cage actually held, I don't think it's occupants would be felling that good. :D

On the same topic, anyone seen the o-rfab cage, that bolts to the pillar? How safe do you think that is? I like the option because you get more leg room, but not sure how strong it is:confused:

Definately a better way to to go IMO....we just finished a full cage for my buddies YJ that has integrated seat mounts. Pics are listed in this forum.

This cage was just bolted to the tub, as you can see the bar took a VERY hard impact and the tub held up well. But it did have a big floor plate

Also ment to mention if you want something more then just to protect just incase of a hard roll, like you roll often definatly go to the frame. It will not fatique like the tub

Jeff, that musta been an impressive roll. How many rolls did you do?
If I remember correctly your cage is just body mounted right? As is mine, although I managed to also mount a larger plate on the underbody to reinforce it. It does not tie to the body mounts or frame.
The cage held up well during my roll but I only rolled once- right onto the roof. A slight bend in the front cage is all it suffered.
I would think it stronger to tie into the frame and will probably do so

Thats not my jeep, its my dads old one. Yes it was just to the tub, and the tub held up fine. Also not exactly a roll but more of an airborn indo at 35mph!!! hit a 4-5 imbankment and landed on the the other side
