: How do you tell when your oil pump is gone?

Well I was idling my 76 FJ-40 today and when I looked into the valve cover it looked "dry/clean" I could see oil in there on the bottom but it made me nervous. The oil stick reads "F" and the temp gage is normal.

And do the 76 FJ-40's have a "knocking "sound to them? I adjusted the valves and there fine, It seams to be coming from the block, I think it was always there but now I’m paranoid.

No oil pressure would be a sure sign, but the engine wouldn't last long. What is your oil pressure? If you are not sure about the gauge, get a mechanical one. 2Fs can make a little rod knock on startup when the oil pressure is low, but is should go away when you have pressure.

The oil gage (I thought it was oil temp) runs just below 1/2. I can't here the "knocking" from inside the vehical, just if the hood is up and I'm standing there. What are your thoughts?

If you can't hear it in the cab, then it isn't a rod knock. Sounds normal with oil pressure at 1/2.

If you just did a valve job or had the head off you might have got the head gasket on wrong. If so you can plug the oil flow to the valves. I had a freind do this.

I can see the gasket looks good from the outside, Is it safe to assume that it is on right?

If you just had the head off, it is possible to get the gasket flipped 180 degrees if you don't know about it. In the wrong orientiation, there is no oil flowing to your valve rockers.

if you didnt have to trim the head gasket to put the water pump on ,then the head gasket was installed correct.2f's do not normally make a knocking noise.How many miles on the engine? You can have good oil pressure and still have a rod knock.As far as looking in the filler cap to see if there is oil,most of the oil runs towards the back of the engine.Try using a steathascope and isolate the location of the noise

JSH, the majorty of the noise is coming from the block, the part with the thin sheet medil with the x on it, below the valves. I did not have to trim anything but lookin at an extra gasket it looks to me that eather its on right or not.
