OK all you rear-end experts (make that JEEP rear end experts) help me out. I've never seen the insides of a trash-lock, but this is supposed to be one in a D44. Looks open to me. Anyone KNOW what this is by the looks?

... can't tell from that angle. You'll have to pull the carrier and see if there are clutch packs next to the side gears.

BTW:

What vehicle?

Is this carrier/trash lock factory?

Was there a limited slip tag on the cover plate?

'01 TJ, factory D44/trac loc.

Tag and invoice say so, just didn't look right. Where are the clutches and what am I looking for?

(Yes I know it's almost worthless, but it's all my wife would let me have for now...)

Thats a crap lock, oops trash lock. Look at how thin the spider gears are, right behind them are the clutches.

You should be able to see the clutches if you turn the ring gear around. There will be an oil port you can look through to see the clutches. They are usually silver looking and bumpy. It does look like a Trac-Loc. Depending on wear you might need to replace the clutches. about $70.00.

Unfortunately, since my TJ is about 10 years younger than our furniture, my Christmas locker has turned into a new couch. It seems that when you take a vote, even though its tied you're wife's vote is always the tiebreaker.

Oh well....

No it's not. You are better off welding an open carrier than a trak loc.

when u put it back together make sure u add the friction material to the gear oil or u wont have a working track lock.

and yes... it is better than open.. works pretty well.. learn to use the brakes to help both tires spin... either by using ur foot.. or by using E break.

Its called.. a good off road driver is Built.... not baught.

HAVE FUN.. take the wife and kids with u....

Thanks for all the replies.

Among the experts, it's about 50/50 whether this is a trac-loc or not. And the answer is....

Yes it is. I got my hands on a parts list and yes, it is indeed a trac-loc. Kudos to all the correct answerers, and to those who were sure it wasn't........

Go here (http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?DSD~deabill~2v) and plug in your 6 digit BOM from the back of the right axle tube. Then look up your suffix to see what you have.
