I may be reading your post wrong, but putting longer shackles on will not raise the pinion. It will raise the frame. The only thing that would raise the pinion is taller tires.

he means raise the angle. not raise it of the ground, point it more upwards towards the t-case.

Shackle length is realy realative to your set up. with an spring pac with excesive arc you need a longer shackle to compensate for the springs length as it flatens out. Longer shackles layed back at an angle can be used to increse wheel travel and help a spring pack fully extend.
As I am shure allot of people on this board will agree with me, "shackle lifts" suck.
An exesivly long shackle lift can put excesive stress on the hanger and frame. It can fully screw your stearing geometry (neg caster) and provide a harsh ride (shackle becomes verticle).
If you are simply wanting to rotate your pinion, I would suggest staying away from long shackles. For the rear end it is just a matter on relocating your spring pads. Unfortunately for the front, its a little more pricy. Cut and turn is the way to go. You get optimum caster and you can set your pinion as desired.

you could always throw a shim in there too to rotate the pinion.

ah, then cool <IMG SRC="smilies/biggrin.gif" border="0"> a shim would work. just get a centerpin with a nice long head.
if you can score a steel shim, you can buzz it in place too.
