: corecting YJ steering problems

My XCL coilovered YJ has had an anoying steering play since I did all the suspension (it was there before but was much les noticeable).
The steering box has 100.000 miles into it and the steering setup is same as OEM, but over the knuckle, and with reinforced links , the XCL kit had a 4" drop pitman but it induced bumpsteer so i went back to the 2" OEM. All the tie-rods have been checked and/or changed.
I blamed my old steering shaft for the play so installed a nice BORGESON : It improved but still there.

Checked caster +3degrees

With 35" I donīt have any problem offroading a low speed he problem is at highway speeds.... big lack of precision that makes driving a very demanding task to avoid going all over the road.

Questions:
1.- How can i check the play of the installed OEM steering box, while on he rig??
2.- Will it improve with an PSC or AGR aftermarket kit?
3.- I "know" That a RockRam will INCREASE the lag but will it actually help??

Thanks

Does the XCL setup have a track bar and if so are the bushings any good? Track bar bushings could cause the steering to feel slow.

Are all your rod ends and ball joints tight? Are you running some type of track bar on the front? A little slop can really add up with the larger tires. Also the tires you are running have a lot to do with how it precise it feels. You might try borrowing a set of narrow 33's to see you can eliminate the tires as the cause before dumping more $$ into it. In my experiance, the wider the tire the less precise the steering will feel.

what kind of toe are you running? You are going to have to change your toe in to compensate for the bigger tires and the load they put on your tie rods. Thats my guess. Also is your drag link angle matched to your track bar? Is your track bar and drag link about the same length? All three of these areas need to work together to make it street worthy

I tested the bushings when i did the engineering tests for the Goverment homologation of the suspension and they had absolutely no slope, the engineer actually said that it was he best setup he had seen.
That is why i turned to the steering box.....

I will check the toe in???
And the wheels??

Couldnīt it the box that is a little weared off???

Thanks for the ideas

The toe in of the front end alignment, when you go up in tire size you will have to compensate for the load the tires put on the tie rods and other moving parts.

Is there a delay in movement of your pitman arm/steering arm from the steering shaft from you steering wheel? If you have someone move the steering wheel back and forth from like 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock and you watch where the steering shaft attaches to the steering box,.....watch to see if the movement in the steering shaft matches the movement of the steering arm. Does it?

I have checked the play in the steering wheel-shaftand up to the steering box and it is perfect zero play.
I will wait till my wife returns home so I can cehck in the pitman.... Iīm alone at home and my arm does not strech that much.

Will get back ASAP

By the way what a nice rig you have .... a 91Yj like me but more evolutioned
