my 75 scout w345 and gold box died. Went out in the morning to warm it up, it ran for 5 minutes or so, then just died.

Every time I cranked it over it would fire, then die. As long as I was cranking it over it would try to run. IT reminded me of when I installed the new Q-jet and forgot to hook up the PB vacuum line.

I checked the fuel pump and it was pusing plenty of fuel, filters are clear. After a while i noticed gas coming out of the middle gasket and throttle shaft. I figured maybe a vacuum leak. Called Holley, shipped it to them, they shipped it back reassembled but didn't note what exactly had been done to it by them. I reinstalled it and now it won't even fire.

Could this be a goldbox problem? any other idea's?

TIA Ben

If it only runs while the key is in the start position, you have a problem with your Primary electrical system, either in the ignition swith or maybe somewhere else in the wiring, maybe the firewall connection. Basically your not getting voltage to the coil in the run position only the start i think......

I'd second that.

Not sure *exactly* how gold box ignitions are wired, but on points, there is a direct feed off the started to the coil when it is cranking over, however the power to the coil is run off the harness (through the bulk-head connector) from the ignition key for "run".

I don't know if it works with gold box, but put the ignition in "run" and take you volt meter to the coil. See if you have power, if not, then you need to trace why not, but you have found your most likely culprate.

This sounds like and ignition problem, not a carb. Best insurance IMO is to lose the gold box and go Pertronix, takes a way a huge probeblem waiting to happen......

good luck

As others have said, there's a bypass wire from the starter solenoid to the coil on POINTS rigs to give 12V when cranking, when you release the key it goes to "RUN" mode which is 9V from through the bulkhead connector.

First, make sure that bulkhead connector isn't crapping out on you. Give it a good shake n' wiggle. ;-)

Use the voltmeter to check for juice at + coil like Mark said.. if no juice, you could try a jumper wire from the + coil to the alternator output terminal and see if it'll run..

Now the bad news.

If you do have a GB setup and it WAS running, and then it died for whatever reason and you let it sit there in the "RUN" position for a while w/o it running, you likely also have a dead goldbox.

There's a resistor in the goldbox that doesn't like being in the "RUN" w/o running.. it WILL explode and render the goldbox useless.

A friend has a points Distributor I can have. I'll make the swap and see if that fixes it. Thanks

Had Napa test the gold box 3 times. Failed all 3 times. Yes, it did sit in the "Run" position for about 30 minutes.

NAPA goldbox is $110 , Petronix ignitor is $105. Looks like I'll make the swap as soon as I get my hands on a distributor.

thanks for the help , Ben

$105 for a Pertronix? Super Scout Specialists carries 'em for $70 or $80..
