: Premier Power Welder wiring question.
matt99tj 12-10-2003, 11:21 PM I have question about the premier power welder with a 195 amp alt. I am installing this on a 99 jeep tj with I-6. I work late every day so I seem to be playing phone tag with customer support so if anyone can help with a few questions. In the instructions I'm required to find an ignition wire from the old harness, and splice it to there brown wire. I believe that the ignition wire will come the field wire connected to the stock alternator? Is this correct? The instructions also state that I must disconnect the red wire from the stock alt at the relay and tape it off, tape what off? The relay, because if I disconnect the wire from the relay what is there to tape off. Oh, is the relay the PCM?. The red wire is connected to the output terminal of the old alt and the PCM? Will this cause any computer problems?

did u ever figure out ur PPW issues? i've struggled w/ issues since day one. Seems the brown PPW wire was spliced by my buddy to a 12 volt wire, but its a solid wire, not braided. Where did solid ignition wires come from??? anyway, i've had BIG problems w/ the voltage going up and down, up and down-- the volt memtr is waving at me! Andthe internal relay in thje PPW box constantly clicks on/off, on/off, on/off...click...click...click all the time. Maybe i'll go around that solid wire and see ifthat makes a difference.
ideas?

Make sure your splices are soldered, and check your grounds. The regulator is super tempermental and will cause the voltage oscillations you describe. I had this same problem (click-click, and the voltmeter fluctuating)- spoke to Pat on a wheeling trip and found out that just using crimp connectors is not good enough. The connectors can not create any resistance. I went back and soldered the connections. i also had my alt rebuilt becuase it was going on 5 years old. I haven't had any more issues since.
renolaw 05-16-2005, 10:25 PM thanks-- i found the brown PPW wire was connected to the solid ignition wire with, ready for this, a wire nut! The twist on variety! It was well hidden and taped up inside the loom and i discovered that after tearing damn near everything else apart. My 'buddy' helped on the install and that was his side of the motor. I isolated the aux. battery, tested everything! all grounds are redundant and bare metal to metal. i bet that is the culprit-- a fawk'in wire nut. I'll soldier that ASAP and see what gives.

renolaw 05-19-2005, 02:17 PM i eliminated that @#%&$$@^ wire nut that connected the ingition wiore to the switched 12 volt source. Cut, strip, soldier and heat shrink-- it runs better than ever!!!!!
thanks all for ur ideas. I'm suprised a crappy connection could make such a
HUGE difference.

Yea, it's funny, but I guess with the amount of amperage flowing through those wires, the connections must be absolutely resistance free. Glad it's fixed!

Yea... he should have since those alternators reach full power at 5000 rpms :shaking:

Funny, I can weld half inch steel at 2500 rpms :flipoff2:
