It depends on how wet it is, how many rigs there are, and what you guys want to run.
Table Mesa would be great, I was thinking I would love to see JR's rig on Matrix. But it is totally undoable if there is water in it. Of course there are plenty of other trails out there to hit.
We may want to go over to the White Tanks and hit Landslide(really awsome night run) and Asylum if we can still get in there.

My right foot is getting twitchy just thinking about it :D
So it seems that the Matrix is the bad'est. Great, let's not start with that one ;). Here's others I've heard of: Anaconda, White tanks, Terminator, Axle Alley, the Asylum and the ever elusive, Boom Town.
How close are these trails together? It'd be great to get back to the camper at night :blender:
My bro, hefe, has done some of these trails in the summer, at night of course. Zags, I don't know, maybe you've got a plan for us  :D, just kind of gettin a feel for it. We plan to stay another day either Thur. or Mon. if anybody else is up for it!

Not to throw a wet blanket on the fun, but almost anywhere you want to wheel here, you will need a permit to access Az State Tust lands...

$15 for one person, $20 for a family permit,,,, family permits cover spouse and 2 kids undwe 15.. So if your buddy is going to ride, he needs a permit of hiz own.. Sucksdon't it?

You have plenty of time to call and get your application in.. The number iz 602 364 ASLD..BTW the fine starts at $300 if they catch you without the permit.....

I am prolly going to have surgery before you guys get over here, so wont be able to run witya, but maybe I can hang oput around the fire some evening...

I'll check into the permit thing this week. It tried to buy one at 4Wheelers a couple months ago and they said the state didn't have enough money to print them, let alone enforce them. Mine expired 6 months ago and after hearing that I said F it. Besides most of the wheeling we're doing at table mesa is on BLM land anyway. Camping is BLM too. That all changes if we go to Florence though. Don't sweat it.

I've got plenty of room at my house (20 mins from Table Mesa) if needed. It's gonna be cold up there at night, 35-40 probably. My blood is too thin, except if I get lots of booze in me. Drunk Pat might make an appearance.

About two miles of good gravel road if we end up at our usual spot. Plenty of room, no fee stations. No services. Just bigger bushes than Johnson Valley. :D

Table Mesa, after the first parking lot is BLM, all trails on BLM except for part of Raw Deal. If you head down towards the lake you enter the Lake Pleasant Park, $5 use fee per day, we rarely go down there.

White Tanks - State Trust, permit required but rarely enforced. There is a desert preserve out there as well, it was expanded but the boundaries vary depending on who you ask. Another year and I bet they start closing this area down due to dust and noise, it's already happening on the north side of the White Tanks.

Florence Junction - State Trust till you get back to a certain point, most trails on BLM or have to cross private land to get to them. Most places people camp are on State Trust. Permits enforced out there, seems random but I have heard of people getting tickets.

You can get it back there easy, a little bumpy in a couple spots, but nothing a 2wd rig and trailer can't handle. Just make sure everything is secured for travel. Drunk Pat needs a place to sleep at night anyway!

Okay, who's going? D-Toy? Aaron? Depending on who goes depends on which trailer I need to bring. If D-Toy (class A) drives with my big trailer, we can put two more in my enclosed behind his truck for a total of 6 rigs with only 2 tow vehicles. LET'S GO!

Chris (Azrckrwler), can't wait to wheel some of those trails you aways post pics of. I called you a long time ago when I was in Apache Junction, but I still had a full body on my Zuk. Do you remember? :)

Oh yeah, AZ guys, will any authorities be checking for registration, insurance, or any other legal stuff? Also, the important one, do you think anyone will check for warrants? I really need to know that one, no joking.

You wouldn't happen to have a class A license, would you? If my big trailer doesn't go, your rig must be able to get under 6'3" for the enclosed. I flatten my tires and suck the suspension down with ratchet straps! What is your width? Also, Erik has the first open spot available unless he can't make it. I'll talk to him soon.

Well, I figure about $250 split 4 ways if we take 6 rigs. Since John and I are taking our trucks and trailers, we shouldn't have to pay! :flipoff2: We can sleep about 10 men in my enclosed, and as many women that we can find! The larger the better, since the floor isn't padded. Hey, when you're in the desert, a kill's a kill!;)

We should leave Apple Valley on Friday at 9 am, which will put us in Phoenix before traffic and in time for a night run. We could leave Sunday at 6 pm and be in Apple Valley just after midnight or so, and still make work on Monday. Or we could all blow off work until Tuesday! I'm down for whateva.

What do you guys think?

Here's a map for ya. The little red X is an approximate location for the campground. You will take I-10 into phx, then head north on I-17 near downtown. Stay on I-17 all the way out of the north side of town(about 45 minutes) until you get to exit 236, which is Table Mesa Rd. You'll exit there, and turn left over the bridge, then immediately right over a cattle guard. You'll now be headed north along a service Rd. that parallels the hwy. Go until the road turns to dirt, and stay on the dirt road for about a mile. Stay right at the first fork you come to, then go left at the second fork you come to. At that second fork, the road gets pretty bumpy. Continue on for another 3/8 mile or so until you come to a cattle guard at the top of a small hill. When you cross the cattle guard, you'll see the campsite directly in front of you. You can go left or right down the hill, the campsite is in btwn the two dirt roads, and easily accessed from either side. Let me know if that was clear...

Well, you got it about half right.
Has nothing to do with the printing or the money to do the printing. It was to do with who is "legal" to sell State Permits..
The permits are available from the State Building, and on-line.
You can bet your ass they enforce. It's a $500.00 fine for being on (even crossing over) STL without a permit, and people *have* been ticketed in the last few months.
With a sizeable group out that way, you can almost bet that they'll be checking for STL permits.
The Table Mesa trails may be on BLM (as the Florence trails are), but you cross STL to get there.

Doen's matter to me what y'all do, but myself, I'ld rather spend the $500.00 on Jeep mods.

I had been under the impression that Table Mesa was all BLM, and no permit was required?? I know that you have to cross a couple of miles of state land to get to the trails at Florence, and I've seen fish&game cops out there before. I've never seen any official vehicles at Table Mesa, ever.

Where are you getting your info?

Like I said above, there is a small strip of STL on Raw Deal , near the end, we have no plans of running thru that trail. I have been told the first parking lot is on STL but guess what, there's a BLM sign there. That leaves about 200ft of road from the freeway overpass to the parking lot, that's a public road. You can go here (http://sco.az.gov/website/arizona/viewer.htm) if you want to see for yourself.

Freds right... the first few miles of table mesa are STL, all the way to the first y give or take. But I was under the assumption as long as you dont stop in there you dont need a permit. The camping area and all the trails except raw deal which is :rainbow: are on BLM.

I dunno, I have a permit so Im not worried... just trying to make things clear as mud.:p

Edit: Chris beat me to it, and is probably more right than I am, Im just going off memory from looking at a map 6 months ago...:flipoff2:

Stop with all the permit talk. Our guests don't need to hear all this shit. The only officials out near Table Mesa go to the lake park, which is now a fee area. They go laugh at the rednecks stuck in the mud and make sure you paid the $5.
The area we will be at is all good. Last time I saw Game & Fish out there, they said hi, waved, and kept driving.

We are going to prerun some of the trails this weekend. I think you guys are going to be happy with AZ. Your rigs might not be to happy though. :flipoff2:

Why not just get a permit, are they too expensive? Also, as I mentioned above, my buggy doesn't have any papers. Is that going to be any sort of issue? If buying a permit keeps "Johnny Law" off my back, then I don't have a problem! If you AZ local guys (that actually wheel a lot) say nothin ever happens, then I'm okay with that also.

How do the AZ trails compare to Back Door at the Hammers? From the pics, it looks like they are just as fun. Don't answer unless you've wheeled Back Door...and the AZ stuff.

Thanks,

Outlaw style is all good. No papers no worries.

As for Backdoor, I haven't run it. I have however run everything else at Hammers with little trouble. If people can run Backdoor in 4-7 minutes, then IT IS NOT THAT TOUGH. We have a couple trails that are going to blow your mind. You think it doesn't get any better, then around the corner another monster waterfall. Totally badass. We are spoiled living here. JackA, what good is the secret stuff if you always keep it a secret? Back Door can be done in 4 minutes or so, but it can also take a couple of hours! It's all about line choice. When that trail gets finished (Taint), it'll bust your balls for quite a while.

You need a STL permit to drive over any State Trust Land.
You need a STL permit to "recreate" on STL, and driving on the dirt roads/trails, on STL, IS recreating.
I don't give a flying rats fart if you believe it or not.
People have been stopped, and ticketed, in the Florence area, just driving on the dirt roads, heading out to the various trails.

I'm not sure how much land in the Table Mesa area is STL. Never looked, don't care (I have a permit. That's the great thing about the $15.00 or $20.00 per year. I don't have to worry, nor care ;) )..
I do know that some of the area around the 'y' in the road, is for sure.

Whether anyone will get stopped out there, I have no clue. Sometimes (at least in the Florence area), the Sheriff's are out in force, other times you go for months and never see them. (The Sheriff tickets more often around the Florence area, then Game and Fish. I'm seldom/rearly up around Table Mesa, as it's a pretty long drive from Tucson, but I do spend a lot of time in the Florence area.

Anway, do as you wish.
I just simply brought up the issue, as no one else had.
I'ld hate to see some of the "out of towners" get possibly blind sided because no one thought enough to tell them :)

I hate keeping stuff secret, but when hardcore trails like Asylum start getting paved you know there is a problem. I have heard there is now a ton of stacked rocks on Asylum, can't blame newbies for that. Anyway, a 7 minute trail isn't hardcore. We messed around on Matrix today, I like trails with only one line :D

Those pix are from yesterday. We only went to the first fall to check the water levels. It was empty with just alittle mud. Didn't check the rest.
The upper 6th Day had huge pools of water, 5-10, in the middle of summer. Looks killer though.

We haven't attempted anything more on the 6th day since last year. I have an idea on how to get around the big water pit that stopped us last year, just have to find some time and some willing people to do some work. I also have a good idea for Matrix : Reloaded ;)

We should have 6-7 rigs.
More than enough for the tougher trails.

For some of the others who want to come out, everyone is welcome around the campfire.
Unfortunately, we will have to make the tougher runs invitation only. Otherwise it may interfere with party time. We have a pretty big group already and usually run at a pretty fast pace. So if anyone else wants to run, form your own group and have at it. Please keep your experience and vehicle capabilities mind. We will be running the ususal stuff too, but some of these are not trails for newbs. In our experience, you can add an at least hour for every rig on trails like Matrix.

The t-case mount didn't break though, but the t-case broke out of it's mount! The only thing keeping it from rotating was the shift lever! It has a hole in the t-case about the size of a baseball. Oh yeah, it needs a hood, radiator, fan, air cleaner, and a couple of rims! I don't know if it was the first roll that did it or the fourth one half way up the waterfall on Backdoor! Anyway, with a little luck and Erik's work schedule, we might make it to AZ.

Are there any plans being made for a pussy run as well? There's only so much sitting on rocks watching Jack try to steer before it gets boring :p

I didn't know we had to plan for that kind of run, I just thought it was a given! If not, maybe some of the Benders' wives can bring some friendlies.
When I used to stay in Pheonix for a race, my buddies wife worked at a club off Deer Springs Road exit. Is that close to where we'll be? :) She is very friendly (did I mention VERY?), and she has plenty of co-workers who are even friendlier :D . I wouldn't mind stopping by!

Anyone that wants to run easy stuff can go for it. The BTG crew will be busy showing the Benders all the right stuff.
As for the club, if you are talking about the one on Deer Valley we're in business. They remodeled just recently and I happen to have some free passes too. Oh ya, my house is about 10 minutes away. The place we're camping at is about 20 minutes away.;)

Table Mesa Road... if they wheel, they should know where that is...
after that it's easy to get to the camp... up the road to the 2nd "Y", make a left, after the cattleguard if you miss camp you're blind.

It really only needs the steering cooler and a muffler then it should be ready for the highway drive.

Well some hrs of cage finish welding couldent hurt.

Eggcellent, I was getting worried with all the this talk of planning shit.

Question, how close are the gas stations... and how far are we bombing to get to the trails?

Basically is a stock yota tank and an extra 5 gallons enough to run on and still make things go:nuke:?

Dave,
A full tank of gas and 5 extra should be plenty for a weekend assuming your junk is running halfway right. We'll have extra gas for stuff. There's a gas station and civilization about 5 miles away, so no worries.

My week is flying by, but I blame that in Paz.

:D

I can't wait to get out of town. I should be getting the 14'x14' (with an add-on 4'x4' shithouse) from UPS on thursday, so I will hopefully get to try it out this weekend. I still need to fix my rear spring bushings, look at my front brakes, pack, wash my sleeping bags and get the Hotrod 4runner the hell out of my driveway before the weekend.

That should keep me busy. :D

The weekend before New Years, I chopped the front off. Tonight, Dan Bell and I pulled the gas tank (leaking) out and built some little spring hanger ramps and tomorrow we'll be remounting the gas tank up on the mini flat bed in the back ;)

I'll post pics tomorrow night.

We plan to be at this location around 6pm on Friday. If this isn't the meetin place, let me know.
Is there cell service?

AZFord4x4
01-14-2004, 12:55 AM
from what I've seen, cell service can be a bit spotty, but it's there. Mine doesn't have service out there though (POS in town only crap)
I probably won't be out till mid afternoon, so I'll probably be floating around up by camp or closer to I17 around that time & I'll keep my eyes open. My rig is hard to confuse with any other, so start blowing the horn or something if you see me. If you got a CB in the tow rig I'm usually on 4 or 10... most likely 4 if I havn't found anyone yet.
