drnut 12-20-2001, 07:53 AM How do you set up a truck to be flat towed?
What do YOU flat tow with?
Have you had any problems flat towing?
I need to flat tow my 85 toy w/35's with my stock 2001 Blazer do you think i should do it?
I know i need a real tow truck and tow trailer so don't give me shit! :flipoff2:
THANK YOU
welndmn 12-20-2001, 09:20 AM 1., pull the D-shaft
2. Fullsize trucks (f-250 for the last 3 months)
3. yup after about 60 MPH you get a good sway from the the rig being towed
4. A blazer would be very scary, i don;t think it has the brake to stop the blazer and the yota
i flat tow my jeep (12 inches of lift and fullwidth axles, and i swap 35 mt on so i dont wear the boggers out) with my f250(converted to 350). ive been doing it for 2 years now. all i do is turn the front hubs free and undo the rear lower d shaft u jiont and tie the d shaft up and away i go. i have never had any probs she tracks fine behind the ford they are the same width both 1 ton axles and actually have the same size tires when in tow and sit about the same height. im sure the extra tires in the back of the pickup help put some weight on the rear axle of the truck.
StinkBug 12-20-2001, 01:59 PM I wouldn't tow with that blazer. I tried towin my amigo back from vegas after the tranny blew in a friends 2k blazer, and at about 65 it started swayin. about 3 minutes later we were parked on the right shoulder facing the wrong way. had to drive the rest of the trip at 55. I'd be willing to bet my amigo is lighter than your toy and it was only on 32s.

Grandpa Jeep 12-20-2001, 02:14 PM My CJ-3A is a lot smaller than your Toyota, but I have no problem towing my it with my Explorer. If fact it's actually a little better with the Explorer than it is with my 1/2 ton pickup. The rear of the explorer doesn't get pushed around as much. Even on the truck it's only a problem on gravel or rain. Snow is real scary. I almost got pushed into a gas pump while turning into a gas station at 2 MPH in the snow.
squirrelman83 12-20-2001, 02:34 PM I flat-tow my 88 Samurai with 33's with my Ford Ranger 4.0L. It does fine. It's a little spooky at high speeds around turns due to body roll on the truck, but then again, I don't have any sway bars on the Ranger. The owner's manual says 4 things to do when flat-towing: (1) T-case in nuetral, (2) Transmission in second (I have a manual transmission), (3) Unlock front hubs, and (4) Turn the key to the "accessory" (ACC) position. The only thing that I would add to this is to remove the rear driveshaft. Good luck. ~Steve
Bill Collins 12-20-2001, 03:40 PM i just bought an 84 toy that was towed behind a motor home.it is already wired for the lights and has a tow bar.but the guy never took the driveshaft out,he just put the t-case and tranny in neautral.it has over 200k on the odometer,he said it has been towed around 100k.it does not have any slack in anything from leaving the driveshaft in:smokin: ...
flimmy 12-20-2001, 05:02 PM I have flat towed my 84 toyota xrta cab with 33's and locked rear. I unbolted the rear driveshaft for far trips and left it connected for local trips ( 50 mi. or less )
I towed it with my 93 F350 ( gone now) and with my 97 Ford Expedition.
It towed fine. I made a pair of tail lights to connect to the tailgate for the long trips that plugs into the flat 4 trailer wiring so I have lights on the truck.
A friend and I made a bracket that bolts to the front frame x-member to attach a tow bar to so it can be removed when we get to the wheelin spots. It also will bolt to any toyota truck. That way it can be used on more than one truck.:D
evilfij 12-20-2001, 06:09 PM I drag my little Series II 88 around with my fiance's disco or my Rangie. Both have really good brakes which is key. I actually found it to be much more pleasant and easy flat towing than with the series on a trailer.

Travis Waldher 12-20-2001, 07:35 PM I flat tow my Jeep at the moment. 33" tires and stock axles at the time with my 1500 4x4 dodge.
As long as the pavement was half decent tracking and wagging was never a problem... as soon as the pavement got not so good I can't do more than 50mph cause the thing tracks differently than my truck in the pavement ruts. otherwise 70+mph no problem.
I do run RS9000's.. I set them to 4 or 5, and I run 3-400bs in the bed to hold the back end down. both those seem to help while flat towing.
DustyM 12-21-2001, 07:25 AM I flat tow my cj-5 with our 1 ton dually, and I do not even know if its behind me. With the camper on I cant see it in my mirrors, so i leave the curtain open.
Travis, I thought you had a trailer?
Are you sure you dont need a cheap motorhome?

your crazy! flat towing sux! most people only do it because they have no other choice
drnut 12-21-2001, 05:38 PM Well thank you for all the info! I don't think i will flat tow with the Blazer, sounds too scary! I guess it's back to plan A and save for a real tow truck (2wd 3/4 ton chevy). For now i guess i will have to live with driving it to the places where i'm going to wheel.
evilfij 12-21-2001, 07:11 PM Well I guess I am crazy!
I have done it both ways and flat towing is way easier and better. I don't even know its back there other than the drag. The only thing that sucks is that I can back up unless I have a driver in the series.
Some things I did were put the tow bar near the extremes of its spread. And my steering on the series is really light and non PAS.
Also rover brakes are outstanding. That is my main concern.

I do.. I just gotta swap axles so I can get trailer brakes and good tires under it. should be done this spring. (Just need the time) so I flat tow only when I need to for now. (or when the weather makes the tow rig more comfortable than the jeep)
motorhome... haven't found a buyer for that thing yet?
(Man I had to think to figure out who you were.... LOL)
