i have a 1984 720 with a z24 engine and i was wondering how can you tell when the timing chain is bad.

truck starts fine and runs fine
no valve click

but it has 190,000 miles without any records.

i would get a scope to listen more carefully...i mean it could just be a noisy lifter, but better safe than sorry

If Your Not Running A Nissan Oil Filter Get One You Tick On Start Up Will Go Away

Or a better than Fram QUALITY oil filter with a decently proportioned anti-drainback valve. It doesn't have to be a NISSAN part. Sheesh. Ticking on startup can also mean warped exhaust manifolds or broken manifold studs. It smooths out after the engine warms up a bit because the manifolds and heads expand to fit each other better. It's not always a ticking lifter.

It's not always a ticking lifter.

but on the Z24 it usually is. I thought the lifters were adjustable on this engine and required adjustment every 30k miles..in fact I know they were cause I had to readjustmine when I had the head rebuilt. Get a cheap haynes manual it will tell you how.
