I was sitting in my computer chair scratching Loki's belly and the wife snapped a picture.

The dog hates me... :D

Wouldn't matter, he doesn't chew on it. If it isn't "chewable" he won't mess with it. He has two that size and a different kind with a star-like hole in the middle... he carries them around every once in a while, but that is it.

We give him one of these every other day or so. He will eat it in one day.

Those are my 'puters. The wife's 'puter is on the other wall.

He is just under two years old... I am "planning" to try and train him in Schutzhund. The trainer that had him said he had the smarts for it and the temperament. Sounds cool enough.

The bite work sounds interesting at the least.

Nice pic and a good looking pup. You've gotta love those dogs with the killer reputations. Here is a pick of my "killer Akita" waking up in the morning.

Yeah, and when other people are over and they are lounging around like big babies... you put your hand out as if to ward them off and say "Easy boy... Eassssy..."

Nice looking Akita BTW. I haven't even seen one of those in forever.

What is his temperament like? Is he independant like northern breed dogs (Sammies - Siberians), or are they more disciplined/owner oriented like a GSD? I have never had much exposure to them...

Good looking dog though, both mine enjoy that same "I'm a killer dog" pose.
I'd use a little caution when feeding those 'chews' to your hound. My last pup used to consume those things in a day as well. He ended getting quite ill a couple of months later (different cause)and we had to get all sorts of tests and scans and crap. Long story short, he had about four pounds of partly digested rawhide in him (stomach and intestine) for who knows how long. Vet says that that stuff will stay in their system for months, a serious clog in the system...

Huh, didn't know that. Most of the dogs I have ever been around chewed kongs mostly. I remember when they were the best things since sliced bread.

Loki just ignores them for the most part though. Unless you grab it, then he thinks it is his and he wants it back... selfish bastard.

He'll chew on it if I put peanut butter in it, but only till he licks every last bit of peanut butter out.

He kind of walks both lines...it's very strange. He is a total people dog. He is very, very loyal and must always know where I'm at in the house. On the other side of that he is extremely independent, intelligent and stubborn. He will listen but quite often he will listen only when it suits him. I can't let him off lead because he will just follow his nose and ignore me. I don't really know how to catagorize his behavior other than he is like most other Asian breeds. He is a fantastic dog but it's not a breed that I would recommend for anyone.... takes a lot of work but if you put in the time you will be rewarded.

What's funny is...

He is mostly a big baby, but when people come over for the first time (since we got him) - a lot of times they are jumping back from the door and pinwheeling arms trying not to fall on themselves.

He can transform rather suddenly into a pretty intimidating dog. He has some pretty big teefers too!

I am anxious to see how he does with an agitator/handler when he starts his bite work in Schutzhund.

ya know, over the past few years every mailman we've has has been deathly afraid of my dog. But the UPS guy in Livermore used to bring him treats and the FBI guys played with both him and the cat... Funny how a big black dog seems to scare folks... he's not that tuff

If you don't know Varga you would probably be afraid of her..just by looking at her. The fact that she is probably running or lunging toward you might also help that, but you'll soon realize that she just wants to jump on you, kiss you and shaking her butt at you. Many can attest to this :D :roxy:

Akitas are a little bit of each. The bad side is they need to be in a one dog family, or they will make it a one dog family;) 'Rents had three dogs (one terrier mix and two Akitas) They came home from work to find they only had one Akita. Other than that she was a good dog and would have taken on a car if it meant saving one of us kids

I don't blame the mailmen. They get chased and harassed by dogs constantly... it pays for them to be wary. Although, the dog picks up on that and reacts to it as well… so they are kind of making it worse for themselves.

Most people do not know how to approach a dog, and they approach them like they would a person. For a well mannered dog, that isn’t a bid deal, but it isn’t the “right” way either. You approach people with eye to eye contact, with the front of your body towards them, usually with a smile, and you are standing up. All these are signs of aggression to a dog (eye contact, showing your teeth, approaching with your front towards them, and standing up – which makes you look bigger and more aggressive). All it takes is a person doing that one time and getting a bad reaction from a dog with a bad temperament to make them afraid or wary of dogs… and the dogs pick up on that.

Of course, seeing a dog with rabies, or a movie like Cujo might deter people a bit too. :D

Never heard much about them other than their stigmas.

I prefer pack dogs, because I would like to have more than one at some point. I will either get another GSD (male) or a Husky.

The problem I have with Siberians and Sammies are their independance though. I do not want to have a dog I have loved and trusted for five years or so just get up and bolt one day because they are "just like that". I have heard that story far too much from those two breeds. On the other hand, Huskies are good multi-dogs and will usually get along with other dogs great.

Probably end up with another GSD... as long as it is a male and he meats Loki first, I should be cool.

Akitas are cool looking dogs though. Sounds like they may have a little of that independant "thing" but I don't know if it extends to running off out of the blue or not.

What kills me Mike, is that NONE of the mailmen have had any exposure to the dog. Most have just heard him or seen him thorugh the window.. but one has made a HUGE point of telling me he was afraid of my dog (like EVERY time I saw him). Should have been a complete non-issue really that way... on the plus side though, I wouldn't mess with his kids ;)

For the first three years of my pups live he lived with 2 other dogs never had a problem with them. I wouldn't want ot try and bring another dog into the house now but as long as they are raised with them it usually isn't an issue.

Hey, I am afraid of spiders... it is an irrational fear, as I am even afraid of Daddy Long Legs - even though I know they can't hurt me, and they aren't even spiders.

My favorite question from people is: "Will he bite?"

Yeah! That's why I just told him it was OK to get up and charge the door with a complete stranger in front of it! :D

I had a kid ask me that while I was taking him for a walk. I replied: "He won't bite me."
