: They're Heeeeere! - Rockstompers arrived....need directions (Scott)
BillaVista 12-20-2001, 01:11 PM The poor UPS guy nearly bust a gut delivering Chad and my 8 sets of Rockstomper beadlock kits all bolted together with 1500 bolts, washers, and nutcerts inside!
Anyway - I know I could / should be able to sort it out, but I want to ask because I don't want to fawk up my investment. Believe me, I'm not as dumb as this sounds...but you can't be too careful
Scott - can you provide step bystep installation instructions - no detail to small. I just wanna get it right the first time.
Some questions I have are;
- There are no "sides" to either the inner or outer lock ring correct?
- The bigger holes are the inner ring right?
- Weld on inner ring before inserting nutcerts?
- What is the tool / technique to inserting the nutcerts. I figure you must have it down to a science by now.
- Confirm weld must be air tight (I plan to MIG with .023 and argoshield)
- Basic steps are center inner ring, tack, check, weld. Cool, paint. Paint outer ring. Insert nutcerts, mount tire, place on outer ring, start bolts, carefully torque in star pattern. paint bolt heads (if desired
- What is the torque spec?
Maybe put instructions up on your page?
I'm stoked

Charly 12-20-2001, 04:33 PM I just wanted to say :flipoff2:, you lucky bastard.
I hope to see them this coming summer when I come to wheel with you guys.
wheelinjp 12-20-2001, 04:49 PM I thought the specs were up? Isnt it 18to 20 ftlbs. I bet it would be easier to insert the inserts before you weld them on? Scott? Where are you Scott?
Bgcj5 12-20-2001, 06:12 PM Boy are u lucky. congrads on the wheels
ChadLloyd 12-20-2001, 08:10 PM I think Bill and I would be remiss if we did not mention one fact about the bead locks which turned out well - but the guys on this board deserve to hear all the facts.
When the package was shipped, Rockstomper basically bolts all the rings together (there were 16 of them in this case), throws the bolts and stuff in the center, and sends it that way. It's more complicated than this, anyone who wants more exact info can email me for pictures.
When the package arrived, one of the rings on the outside was warped. After much discussion Bill and I decided that the only way this could have happened was if the package was dropped from a signifigant height - we simply don't believe that Scott would send out product that way, and there's no way the bolts would provide enough tourque to warp 1/4 inch plate.
I sent pictures and explanation to Scott, he has said he will send us a new ring and then go after shipping agent (UPS) for the damages. While I haven't actually got the ring yet, I am confident that this will be done. I am also confident that the damage was the result of shipping damage, I simply can't see how else it could occur.
So my point is: shit happens, the question is what does the manufacturer do about it when it does? In this case, RockStomper came through with good and proper customer service, something that anyone considering their product should factor in to their purchase decision, and something I felt the members of this board would want to know.
The rest of the shipment looks really cool and I can't wait to get it all assembled!

Heheheh... my UPS guy did the same.
Anyway - I know I could / should be able to sort it out, but I want to ask because I don't want to fawk up my investment. Believe me, I'm not as dumb as this sounds...but you can't be too careful

We're supposed to have step-by-step instructions on the website as of a few days ago, but our ISP is freaking out over that the website is already over 75meg, and stuff's getting "lost" because of us overrunning our quota. Trying to sort it all out. :(
- There are no "sides" to either the inner or outer lock ring correct?
One side is rounded; the other isn't. The rounded edge goes towards the tire. It's not that important, but it makes life a little easier; the rounding is very slight.
- The bigger holes are the inner ring right?
Correct.
- Weld on inner ring before inserting nutcerts?
Correct.
- What is the tool / technique to inserting the nutcerts. I figure you must have it down to a science by now.
I use an impact wrench and a bolt with a small stack of washers. Makes it easier if you grab the nutsert on the other side with a pair of pliers to keep it from spinning while you do this. 30-40 ft-lb is all it takes to seat 'em, so no thermonuclear impact wrench necessary. There is a special pneumatic install tool that they sell for this... it's basically an air drill with a bolt chucked into it. I saw that and said "screw that, I'm not blowing $600 on an air drill with a bolt in it".
- Confirm weld must be air tight (I plan to MIG with .023 and argoshield)
Correct; weld must be airtight. If it's not, the tire on that wheel will gradually go flat.
- Basic steps are center inner ring, tack, check, weld. Cool, paint. Paint outer ring. Insert nutcerts, mount tire, place on outer ring, start bolts, carefully torque in star pattern. paint bolt heads (if desired
Basically, yes. Star pattern on the bolts will help assure that the tire is centered properly and the ring stays straight, but it's not entirely necessary.
- What is the torque spec?
20 ft-lb maximum; I've got mine at 10, and not leaking.
Maybe put instructions up on your page?
As soon as I get through with the ISP folks... my money's on that they're about to find a way to charge us more for web space again (rates just nearly doubled a couple weeks ago) for exceeding our quotas. Ohwell... it's on the way; sorry it's not there yet.
