No, I never crossed the equator, so I'm still a slimy pollywog.

ABOARD USS PELELIU(Dec. 2, 2002) -- Hundreds of Marine and Navy pollywogs currently deployed with the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) became shellbacks after completing Wog Day, also known as "Crossing the Line" ceremony aboard the USS Peleliu Dec. 2.

"Crossing the Line" is a time-honored U.S. Naval tradition held the first time a Marine or Sailor crosses the Equator aboard a ship during a deployment. The wogs, who volunteered for the event, participated as teams through several water-soaked obstacles and rituals to pay tribute to King Neptune to earn their shellbacks. They were guided and encouraged by shellback crewmembers, who had already crossed the Equator.

For many who participated in the event, it was a chance for them to carry on tradition men and women serving the military before them had endured.

"I'm all about tradition," said Sgt. Jude S. Cabrera, platoon sergeant, Marine Expeditionary Unit Service Support Group 13.

"I love tradition, it's one of the reasons why I joined the Marine Corps," he said. "I enjoyed being part of it and continuing it on."

The ritual began at 5:30 a.m. when the wogs were awakened from their sleep and were told to quickly dress. Sleeves down, trousers un-bloused, blouses buttoned to the very top was the uniform of the day, which many referred to as "recruit style" referring to how Marine recruits dressed while enduring boot camp. To ensure all wogs were treated equally, rank insignias were removed from everyone's collars.

Marine and Sailor wogs laughed at each other as they were ordered to sing children's songs such as "I'm a Little Teapot" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" to entertain the shellbacks they encountered as they made their way to the ship's hangar bay.

Those wogs who managed to make it into the hangar bay unscathed by shaving cream and lard were not spared their anointment. When they finally arrived in the hangar bay, they were sprayed with fire hoses that doused them with salt water from the ocean.

The event continued up the ship's ramp towards the flight deck where King Neptune was waiting for his homage.

"I had a good time," said Cabrera, who is experiencing his first Western Pacific deployment. "I experienced something new I've never done before. It was fun."

For many of the new shellbacks, the event was a change in the sometimes-monotonous days aboard the ship.

"It was a chance to get out of the office and do something different and participate in a tradition that has been going on for a while," said Lance Cpl. Jessica L. Berry, administration clerk, Marine Medium Helicopter 163 (Rein).

"I had a great time," she said. "All the wogs were treated equally and I got to go through it with friends. No one was getting upset about it because it was all in good fun."

A Steel Beach picnic immediately followed the ceremony. Hamburgers and hot dogs were grilled up and served on the ship's flight deck, complemented by a live band, sumo-wrestling suit match and impromptu break-dancing exhibition. Many of the crewmembers stayed topside to enjoy the day and relax with friends until sunset.

According to Berry, the events of the day boosted her morale.

"After Wog Day my morale was high and it continued on to the next day," she said. "I think it brought a lot of morale up for the people in berthing because everyone was talking about it."

It's been "toned down" quite a bit, no more beatings until moral improves:flipoff2: and probably don't have the tunnel anymore, but I wouldn't know, I'm just a lowly wog.:D

Disgusting, ain't it? One ship I was attached to had a wog commodore ('scuse me, rear admiral rear half) aboard. He was initiated into King Neptune's court just like the rest of the wogs. Helluva a guy!

18 years ago when I came in, it was a volunteer thing, ........but the big difference was that if you didn't volunteer, you got hazed more than if you had actually done the traditional thing,........ya, I know, we've been slowly "pussifying" the military for many years. All of this "toning down" stemmed from the "Dateline" special that they did about the "pinning" on of the jump wings,......that also, was a volunteer thing, but again, if you didn't you'd get hazed worse.

I did the tunnel and let me tell ya they have toned it down.

We got beat with peices of fire hose and hosed down every turn. Those of us who had attitudes were marked with a green S on our backs. Meant special case. We usually got to do every part of the course twice. I did some of it 3 times.

The uniform of the day was slightly different though. We wore a t shirt, dungarees with left leg rolled up. Left leg had to be shaved from the knee down.

We had a blast and yes the people who dont do it get hazed worse than those that do.

Ah the good ole days and people wonder why I got out. Got to pussified for me.

PC police here,

I did read the whole post, and while never a member of the US armed forces I have particiapted in such ceremonies when crossing the equator while racing yachts.

Do you realize how offensive the term WOG may be to some members of this board?

AFAIK, the term originated in British colonies in the Far East, Worthy Oriental Gentleman, or WOG, was an acceptable term for much of the 18th century and it was only during the middle of the 1900's that the term took on an offensive nature. I think WOG would now rate as offensively as Chink or Jap.

Personally I don't give a damn - call me a crazy cracker, if you will.

Just don't want any PBB members to suffer the emabarrasment of using the term and then not being aware of why they are offending someone.

I thought it was short for pollywog? If so, there are members of the board that are frogs?

Why don't you keep your Pussified Coward views up in Pitkin County? Go hang in Aspen with folks that give a rat's ass about PC speech.

Maybe you'll find some poor Bastids™ that didn't "volunteer" to get their shellbacks...

Sorry Bobzooki,

Redstone Canyon, Larimer county, NOT Redstone, Pitkin County.

I don't give a rat's ass about PC speech, but calling someone a Wog in a Hong Kong dive might get you knifed. BTDT, not pleasant.

Maybe I'm just an ignorant cracker tho' :flipoff2:

It is short for pollywog, some people just go to extremes to try to be sooooooo nice to everybody that it gets to the point of being rediculous.

My brother told me about the first time he crossed the equator in his first boat. He said that they surfaced and everybody went swimming. Got back in and off they went. He never mentioned anything about any hazing; maybe they do it different on subs (lack of space?). I'll have to ask him about it next time he's in.

will probly never see a ship that does that so i am out :(

side note on the whole pussification of the military: when i picked up HM3 and i had my LPO pin it on me (mind you he also doenst believe in PC and holds tradition high) We were in front of an intire battalion of marines, battalion commander, assorted brass.

And he proceeded to "tack" my collar device in place :D
and i saw a lot of high ranking eyes get REALY BIG :flipoff2: followed by a lot of smiles.

it required a spoon to pry the pins out of my clavicle afterward

Oh, sorry (tell me that didn't sound like something you would hear in Pitkin County, though!) - I'll make it a point to stay out of Hong Kong dives, when I'm in the mood to call folks Wogs. Apparently, I'm an ignorant crackah too... :flipoff2:

you slimey wog rich.... how did you ever miss the equater? mr. deployed grunt..... jeesh.. :flipoff2:

the toned down version is pretty gay.. i did the shellback thing in 91 and on that same ship.. USS Peleliu.. was still semi-disgusting.. then we crossed again in 93.. and it was just gay... but my boys made me proud.. when they asked for the full effect of being a wog.. so we brought them back into the shops.. and locked the doors.. needless to say.. ours were the only "dirty" wogs on ship that day..

ya.. i also pin my troops collars... the first time in front of my new captain.. his eyeballs got really big.. but since we are in our own little world.. he didnt say anything.. and we still pass out the blood stripe also.. :D then when its all said and done.. they get a good stacking from the rest of the troops..
