Not at all where you would think. Per capita, the city where you are most likely to get murdered is...

New Orleans. There are 53.1 murders per 100,000 of population. Washington DC is a distant second at 46.2, Detroit third at 41.8. The ones you would most likely think would be at the top such as LA, thats 8th at only 17.1, Chicago is 6th at only 22.1 and believe it or not NYC is one of the safest big cities at only 7.3 murders per 100,000 population.

Actually, it's Tucson.

I would have a VERY small chance of getting murdered in New Orleans, since I never plan on setting foot in that town again.
But, I spend lots of time pissing people off in Tucson, so I expect it is the most likely place for me to be murdered.

This study was done by the FBI of major cities, so they probably didn't look at places like that for this study.

I donno, I'd be willing to bet you could find the statistics somewhere. I remember though back when DC stopped broadcasting the murder rate for the year on the news.. back when it was higher than New Orleans or Detroit ;)

You are statistically safer as an american in Bagdad, than as an american in NO.

I actually am involved in a project with City of NO to wire up the city for Video Surveillance. I met with the 8th Precinct commander which is just north of the French Quarter and includes some nasty housing projects. He pulled out a map of a 10 square block area that had all these little red dots on it. It indicated a location where a murder took place in 2003. 80+ murders in a 10 square block area in 9 months. There were maybe 200 yellow dots, which is a "murder that got lucky" shooting. They also map the breakins and such. That is one fucked up city. He attributed it 100% to drugs. He said it was better when the mob controlled the drug trade.

Here's the stats for most towns in the US:
http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius_02/html/web/offreported/02-table08AL-AR.html

BTW, Newark had 65 murders with a population of 279,000 in 2002.

You know why this is don't you??? Yeha the french part does play into it but there is a reason.

Cause half the fawking year you don't leave your house in all those northerb cites because it's too damn cold! If you looked at the monthly average I bet you find that all those norther cites rank higher. Down south it's too hot durring the summer so they go in to the A/C. :D

The City of New Orleans is indeed a bad place if you ever wander out of the tourist areas (French Quarter, Superdome, etc) and get into some of the "lesser" neighborhoods.

I work in NO, but live about 30 miles away (above sea level :flipoff2: )where it is mostly younger families and yuppies.
They deal with my junk in the driveway and the nilse in the garage...usually neighbors stop by and ask questions because they are curious...cant believe that someone other than the dealer would actually tear apart a vehicle and expect to get it riunning again.
