Yeah, it's went up here. I priced stuff last fall from my friends son. Same thing too, he wants a half pipe. His mom was going to buy a bunch of wood for him this year for Christmas, and I was going to start building it, but when I went back, I was shocked at the cost. Looks like we will be heading to the local parks to skate, and not at home!

I don't know if it's Iraq to blame, as much as it was the California wildfires. Wasn't it something like 2800 homes destroyed?
OSB plywood went from like 7 dollars to something like 20 dollars a sheet
Bartcore 12-16-2003, 03:40 AM
indulf 12-16-2003, 04:31 AM yeah plywood has shot through the roof recently. i was told it was iraq also.
GPERX4 12-16-2003, 06:54 AM Can you use real wood for your projects I go to the saw mill and get the rough cut oak. For what theu want for an oak board in the store I plane and joint the rough cut.I would pat $2 a board and the store want like $40 a board.
toyota87 12-16-2003, 07:00 AM I think that the Iraq thing is a ploy and/or complete BS. One of my buddies works for Georgia Pacific as a forester managing timber for a plywood plant. I asked him about the amount of plywood the gov't ordered for Iraq and he said the whole amount at that time was only the equivalent to two weeks of production at his facility only. Does not seem to be enough to warrant the huge price increases I hear about. Do the greatest increases seem to be in/near California? Are people "scalping" plywood due to the fire damage and asssociated new construction?
It seems to be nationwide, welcome to capitalism... it's simply what the market will bear.. dont think it'll bear it for too long, then again I don't think the producers think so either. FWIW the prices of baltic birch ply (both russian and finish) and apple ply haven't changed here at all ;) OSB is now just about as expensive
LUVMYTJ 12-16-2003, 08:15 AM Here in Louisiana my mom and dad are building a new house that is ALOT smaller than the previous one they built 3 years ago. It is costing alot more to build this one due to lumber prices!

CruiserKitten 12-16-2003, 08:27 AM it's not iraq  it's cali rebuilding from the fires and it's the east coast rebuilding from the hurricane
OSB was $25 a sheet here at home depot this weekend
SilverZuk 12-16-2003, 08:33 AM It's alot like gas.
If they have a reason, the price goes up.
Iraq is taking huge shipments, I would bet that it is far more than the California housing market.
Brown and Root are the main contractors for building stuff for the military. They make everything from ply wood. The tents, walls, barriers, etc.
In the east, everytime that Hurricane is mentioned during the season, the price of plywood increases. When they actually say "it's going to hit land". The prices double all throughout the east.

Huh are you being sarcastic? 2800 homes is probably not even enough to spike the California market, let alone the national market.
Well, add all this AND the most # of new home starts in almost 25 years....

landusepbb 12-16-2003, 09:32 AM A few weeks ago I went to HOme Depot to buy some wafer board, ended up buying 5/8 plywood, the plywood was actually cheaper. Go figure.

ForestCam 12-16-2003, 10:45 AM Just picked up a sheet of 1/2" B-C today @ HD and it was $19, if I remember right it only used to be around $13.
TLCObsession 12-16-2003, 10:51 AM This has been discussed before. Do a search. Bottom line: not Iraq, Not the Hurricane, not the So. CA fires (price went up before then).
It was all the other fires, particlularly the BC fires - burned a lot of mills and timber.
As I said in the other thread: Ironically, it will ultimately drive prices down because of the salvage logging.

3/4 BC was pushing $40 in late Sept when I needed some. Guy at Plymart told me a month before it was about $22 for the same sheet. He said Iraq as well. Military buying it up fast. I needed 6 Sheets to redo the floor in our Camper. :(
Dustin Smith 12-16-2003, 08:17 PM Bought some 1/2 BC Saturday, 12.00/sheet.
Halogrinder 12-16-2003, 08:18 PM my dad has been building a spec house, and he estimated it before the price went up....he now has instead of 6,000 in plywood, its now 10,000 in plywood cause of the price hike
I've seen about 10% increase in dimensional lumber. I'm expecting another 10% on top of that for PT lumber, due to the new chemical system scheduled to replace CCA.
Trim seems to be the same as usual.

MikeW 12-16-2003, 08:47 PM "Oxboard" which is made by Polatch, even through they have plants in Idaho, there is also a plant in my hometown of Bemidji, and also in Grand Rapids.
scottz 12-16-2003, 09:36 PM if anyone in the sacramento area needs to get plywood or siding cheaper you should check out Frank Shaw on Q st. in Rio Linda- he sells blems and factory 2nd's (pops, delams, ect) and while the stuff isn't allways the best you can put in a few extra nails and save some $$$. Just fine for skateramps too...
Paul Gagnon 12-16-2003, 10:25 PM A lot of the price increase you are seeing is because of the softwood lumber dispute. American producers want to keep Canadian softwood out so they can gouge the consumer. ;) (how's that for stirring the pot) :p
