: np203/205 dual t-case questions
Jonathan M 12-21-2001, 02:42 PM I recently aquired a sm465 that has a np 203 t-case attached to it. I was thinking of swapping it for a part time 205 but then heard about the dualt t-case setup. So the question is what is the best 205 to attach to the reduction gear side of the 203 (one that came behind a th350,th400,465...)? Also did the 205 come with a fixed yooouke or slipped your ofr both. If i did get a slipped yoke 205 how hard is it to make it a fixed yoke?
Thanks,
Jon
Steve Sommer 12-21-2001, 08:05 PM www.offroaddesign.com has the info your looking for on their site. I have a doubler kit ordered now. The 205 you need is off a turbo 400. They are a 32 spline input and are somewhat hard to come by. I looked for one for a while and finally just ordered a 32 spline input and big bearing kit for my 10 spline 205. Don't know about the yoke questions.
WideJ 12-21-2001, 09:24 PM just a thought...
if this is going in a TJ, what are you going to do about driveline length and angle? theres not a whole lot of space to work with under there.
JEEPRZ 12-21-2001, 09:49 PM If this is goin in a TJ, use a Ford 205, 32 spline all around. Make sure it will work with whatever adapter kit you use
tigger4x 12-21-2001, 09:53 PM I may be wrong BUT I think you are going to need the same spline count for your NP205 as you have for the NP203. This question is most definitely covered on the Off Road Design website(link given in previous post).
As far as driveline angles go, the ORD Doubler is going to shorten one and the lengthen the other, rear and front respectively I think). The absolute best place to go is High Angle Driveline (www.highangledriveline.com), without a doubt. There are numerous threads with personal testimony of beyond satisfied customers that will HIGHLY recommend Jess at H.A.D.!!
DO yourself the best favor and go to BOTH of these websites! These two investments will be the best you can do for your rig!
Steve Sommer 12-22-2001, 06:20 AM On the TJ which is the subject of this thread, I don't know what he will come up with for driveline angle. On my CJ7 I have a turbo 350/205 in it now which has a 3.5" adapter in between them. The doubler does away with that and allows the 203 to bolt directly to the trans. Overall it will add about 6" of length. Right now I have a 23" OAL long spline drive shaft in the rear. If approx. 16" doesn't work then I'm prepared to move the rear end back.
66CJdean 12-22-2001, 07:54 AM I don't think the doubler will end up to long to use in a TJ. The adaptor in 420/spacer 18 combo was 4.5" and that left me with 14" rear driveline in the rear of my 80" CJ5.
FULLSIZE 12-22-2001, 11:43 AM i'd check again cause the 203 still has an adapter to the trans, the offroad designs adapter goes inbetween the 203/205. the 203 reduction and the adapter and 205 is a 1/2" shorter than the 203. hopew that helps.
Jonathan M 12-22-2001, 12:05 PM The combo will be going in a YJ not a TJ........Just got a project vehicle to go nutz with...
Thanks for the info...
From looking at the chev there is a 465 with a factory adapter to the 203. I need to make a custom adapter for the 203 to the 205. I just wanted to know which verison of the 205 would be the easiest to adapt to the back side of the 203..The ORD design uses 205's that were bolted to th400's but the 205 also came behind the th350 and the sm465. I'd say teh easiest 205 to find around here is the one behind the th350.
Also is the 205 slipped yoke or fixed like the 203? Can you convert it to fixed if it is slipped yoke...
tia
JEEPRZ 12-22-2001, 01:18 PM What front axle do you have?
Most 205s are fixed yoke. Some of the late ones, 1980 and later are slip yoke. Im sure someone else knows more about them
Jonathan M 12-22-2001, 01:45 PM thx dude. I got a front 44 with closed knuckles and drums.......BLAH Got to swap that out..LOL
Might go 60 front if i can find one...in newfoundland...LOL
tigger4x 12-22-2001, 03:14 PM I am pretty sure you can use other NP205s other than the 32 spline TH400 version. IF there is any doubt, I would say call ORD and get the for sure facts. It just keeps bugging me that you should be able to use the 27 spline TH350 version of the NP205. Aren't the 27 spline NP203s okay to use up front too:question:
No matter what, the Doubler is the :nuke: and you won't regret getting it!!
Steve Sommer 12-23-2001, 06:09 PM As I said in my earlier post I have a doubler setup ordered from ORD. I picked up a 27 spline 203 that will bolt to my Turbo 350 without any adapter. I then will use the ORD adapter to mate to my 205. They(ORD) tell me they only make the adapter for the 32 spline 205 off a Turbo 400. Thus they are sending me a large bearing and 32 spline input for my case which I will have to have machined to accept. Hope this clears up a few things. (Also hope it all works out!!!)
tigger4x 12-23-2001, 06:13 PM O I C ... Are the bearing and shaft included int he kit or did you have to order them in addition to it? If you don't mind me asking, what was the price OTD:question: ... Thanks, Keith
Steve Sommer 12-23-2001, 06:31 PM The bearing and shaft are not included with the kit. The kit is $740.00. The bearing and shaft are another $200.00 plus I'm guessing $50.00 for the machine work after I disassemble my 205. I'm thinking I'm gonna be in this deal about $1200.00 with freight. Then I've got to have my drivelines re-done. If you can find a 205 off a Turbo 400 you can probably buy it for what the bearing kit costs. I just got tired of looking and want to get on with my project.
