My brother was wheelin pismo pretty hard in his stock '00 xj. He hit a whoop and it turns out he bent the front 30 housing. He was curious as to what it might cost to put a 44 up front and which 44s would work in his xj. Also if anyone knows what a stock 30 go for that might also sway his decision as he is tight on cash. Thanks for you help. Happy holidays.

As long as he ONLY fubared the housing he could pick up a new HP30 for like $150. Then he may have to have his old gears set in the new housing, depending on if he can find one with the right ratio.

Pick N pull.......

older XJ would be the cheap way. Try to find one with the same ratio. Then use his brakes, possibly outer knuckles, pull & use his axles including the unit bearing and he's set. If he can wait untill new year's day it will be half off.

As to a custom 44 it's not going to be cheap.

You could get the housing straightened for $50. If you get the right pick and pull you might even get a housing for under $100.

Ask around local. D30 housings are a dime a dozen. Most people who have them know they aren't worth anything. ;)

What part of the housing did he bend?
Crushed tube?
Bent tube?
Are your sure it’s not a trac-bar or suspension component or mount?

I know a rear samurai and toy axle housings are super easy to straighten once bent, however they bend easier the next time.
All you need to straighten one of those is a length of chain and a hydraulic jack.

These typically bend in a U shape. You take the chain and loop it around the ends of the tube (outside of the spring mounts). Leave the chain sagging in the middle (drape a rubber band over a pencil to see what I’m talking about).
Measure from top of wheel to top and bottom to bottom. Insert jack and start jacking until the top to top measurement is about ¼” longer than the bottom to bottom. Release jack, roll vehicle back and forth and measure again. Repeat as necessary. To get the measurements to equal. You should truss your axle to keep it from bending it again.

I don’t know if you can apply this to your application, but it may be helpful to others.

Looking into getting the housing straightened, just finished taking off the axle today. Housing looks pretty bad and there is a bit of scoring on the inside of the gears..wonder if that is okay as long as i get it straightened? Looks as if the spline on the inner shaft (long side where it bent) bit at the inside of the gear setup.
