: rear bumper
CulturedRedneck 12-22-2003, 07:01 PM im looking for a rear bumper that will carry a spare tire for my 87 4runner. (35-37 inch spare). it need to swing open so i can still drop the gate on the runner. i couldnt find anyone who makes tham but can remember seeing some pisc of one flaoting around the site a while ago. who makes abumper like this.
More than likely you will have to have it made as most of us have done. I have what you want on my 85, (will carry a 37, but I still run 35s) and will post a pic after I get a shot of it so you have an idea.
Here is a side view anyway, I mad the bumper and had a local bender make my carrier........

tanman2003 12-22-2003, 09:36 PM i know www.truckfarm.com sells some. look for pro farm bumpers on the site. they are kinda expensive, like $500+.
2stroke 12-22-2003, 09:55 PM i think it was www.rockstomper.com that sells the hinge that u can make it swing out with.
Bill Collins 12-23-2003, 10:02 AM i am also thinking about a bumper with rear tire carrier on my runner project.i have 37 ssr swampers on it and do not want to put that much weight on the roof.i will use this truck to take the family on camping trips so i need the cargo space.if anyone has pics post up,i need ideals.i will start building mine next week,i am gonna use square tubing for my bumper and sliders...

Would use 2x2 for the main tube if I built one now though. Also would definitely use Rockstomper's hinge. Dropped some weight and went tube.:D
Priest 12-23-2003, 05:51 PM Here is my old runner. Also, I've got some hinges (the style as rockstomper) that I'll sell you for $35 shipped.

I liked it to but it was a pig. It was easily 1200lbs heavier than my pickup. I needed something with more hauling compacity and something that could get out of it's own way. With the V6 auto it was a slug beyond belief. That and the paint and body were perfect so I was alway shy about lying it into a rock. I figured I would sell it while it was still worth something (before I trashed the body).
My buddy did call me yesterday and tell me that he saw it sitting at a gas station with a for sale sign on it the other day. Sometimes I miss it (full power, perfect interior, sunroof, blah, blah, blah) and if I still used my rig as a daily driver I would probably still have it.
Bones 12-24-2003, 04:23 AM That's why my wife dos not want me to touch our 94 we got. It was a one owner, 54K. It's a damn sweet ride for a 10 year old vehicle

im looking for a rear bumper that will carry a spare tire for my 87 4runner. I have looked closely at doing this, but it totally fubars my view out the back. From my mockups, it seemed to me that I would have essentially no view out the rear window at all. Plus, its going to make an already bad departure angle even worse.
My 35 fits nicely in the bed It will also fit standing up against the rollbar.

This one is off to the drivers side which'll give you a "better" view out the back. He fabbed it himself.
ToyFamily 12-25-2003, 12:12 PM here's a link, it's the only pics I can find of it right now....it now has a 35" spare and the high lift mounts inside the swingout...

Thanks. It was, what I called, an expedition wheeler. Wasn't a rock crawler but it took me on lots of great camping/fishing trips. Very simple and straight forward. Fully loaded '92 SR5, Allpro rear coils, 2" BL, 5.29's, open/detroit, custom rear bumper, custom slicers, surco rack with home made axe/shovel mounts. Because of the weight it could get really good traction. Sometimes I still miss it.
NoBrainR 12-26-2003, 05:15 AM I built mine with the carrier hinged on both sides. Simply pull the pin on the side you want to swing out. An added benefit is that I can take off my tail gate and reverse the carrier to put the tire in the bed for better departure during the summer when I have the top off.

I like that idea as well. Some people never cease to amaze me at their creativeness. Must be alot of people here that smoke weed.
