I would put this under ford, but I think this is more for general.

I am having a problem getting the preload set on my pinion. I have torqued it to spec. but I still have slop. There are no shims. How do I get the flang side pinion bearing to preload?

There is no "torque to spec." on the pinion nut. You have to tighten it enough to compress the crush sleve. Measure the pre-load via a inch pound torque wrench that is accurate to 10 inch pounds or less. Be careful not to over tighten the pinion nut as the preload climbs very quickly when the "slop" reaches zero.

I guess what I need is a stronger impact wrench. It doesn't have enough to compress the crush sleve. I guess I will have to use a big ass braker bar. Cause I aint spend that $ for a better impact wrench..

Tws I have the torque wrench to messure the 7~14 inch pounds of preload.

Thanks Zippo

I ground the teeth off a big pipe wrench to hold the pinion yoke, and use a three foot extension on my breaker bar.

My Harbor Freight impact gun has a max rating of, I think, 400 ft. lb. At 90psi. it couldn't torque its way out of a papper bag. I now run it at 140psi. It works real good now.

yep I agree you havent even started to crush the crush collar start with a good cheater bar and check very often what your looking for is inch pounds of rotational force:smokin:

put the pinion support in the press and press the pinion into it until you have taken all the slop out of the sleeve then use impact to finish :flipoff2: you people make it seem so hard .use your tools properly and you would be amazed at what you can do :D

Get yourself a solid spacer kit Ratech PN 4105. Much easier to set up, reusable, and more reliable.
