I just got my tags for my trailer. They gave me a sticker that has "PTI" on it. The paperwork says it a perminant registration?
Exp. Date: PERM
I guess I should just be thankful. Its just so out of character for the state of California.
Has anyone else got this yet?

Beginning Jan 1, 2002. The law changes for trailers in California.
The new registration method is as follows: All trailers will receive
the PTI plate or sticker.
THere is a modest application fee for ALL trailers. regardless of
weight....! The fees are about $30 for the plate, and about 20
bucks for 5 years of registration.
If you already have a trailer, when the renewal comes due in
2002, you can either trade your plate in for a PTI plate, or keep
your old plate and DMV will send you a PTI sticker.
This is extremely cool...... sidenote: in 1988 when I bought my
Mastercraft boat brand new, the boat reg fees were only
$5 bucks/year. The darn trailer was like 80/yr..........
THere are also major changes for truck registration as well...
For "big" commercial trucks anyway..... The fees are now based
on GVWR weight ratings. so if you say your truck "only" hauls
20k, and your reg it for 20K, you better not get caught hauling
more than "20k"........
I 've been thru all this recently with my modest fleet. Finally
"we" get a break on fees from our state...!

In PA you can get a yearly renewable trailer plate, or if you pay 5X's the yearly rate you get a Perm trailer plate and never have to renew again.

Kind of related: I found a good deal on a 16x8 flatbed trailer. The problem is that it doesn't have any plates, registration, or even a visible serial number. It's been sitting in the guys yard for 10 years and based on the amount of dirt and gunk on it I believe he is being up front and it's not stolen or anything like that.
Would I even be able to register this, or is the CA DMV going to give me no end of grief about it?

I just took my new flatbed trailer I built to DMV and got the Perminant Trailer Licence Plate. Paid a total of $31.

Can't tell you for certain, but in Washington they would issue a VIN# to put on the trailer.

this new law kicks ass for our company...we have 5 semi trucks and about 22 trailers....reg each year for the trailers killed us...on average they were about 1500-2000 per year per trailer...now at 20 bucks for 5 years it saved us big.
