I'm attempting to set up my ring and pinion (5.29) in a toy 8" diff. This is my first time at it, so I'd like some opinions on these patterns. These are the result of a day of stacking shims, and these are the two best drive-side patterns I could come up with. Which should I go with?

version 1.

version 2

The coast side patterns of both look pretty similar, so I'm mostly worried about the drive side pattern. Here's the coast side of version 2:

So which drive side pattern should I choose. And yes, these are the best I could come up with, the pinion just wants to run off the toe of the drive side before becoming centered face-to-flank. Thanks.

Yep....remove .010-.012 from the pinion.

This is how my 44 came out.

heh, no doubt they both suck. Unfortunately, removing .01 moves the pattern up off the top of the tooth a bit far. Regardless, I'll give it another try tomorrow. I've got nothing but time.

Listen to gearman, there is a reason he has that name... even though I don't know why he is helping sense he doesnt suggest ring and pinion setup be a do it yourself kind of deal :p

Thanks guys. I ended up taking off .01 and was fairly happy with the pattern. I buttoned it up and drove it around today, no horrendous noises. We'll see how this works out.

I had a similar problem with a toy 8" gear set. I did some research and found out that 1987 model year thirdmembers are slightly different in the fact that Toyota changed bearing suppliers for their differentials. This is the story that several people told me, but I have no way to prove it.
They suggested to get a different thirdmember housing and start over. I did have a spare thirdmember housing and I put the gears. and locker into, and the pattern was fine.
I threw away that thirdmember housing that I could not get a good pattern on.
I hope all works well. It looks like the drive side pinion will snap some ring gear teeth on that pattern.
Just my opinion.
