: FJ55 Diesel Conversion
cruiserbrett 10-22-2001, 09:25 PM Anyone had luck with the 6.5L GM diesel in a conversion? I am toying with the idea of dropping one (with a ton of work)in my 76 FJ55. I know the steering box will be a problem(going to run a FJ60 box), but other concerns I should be aware of? Any years better than others? Any sites that help with a diesel "newbie"?
Thinking of a 4l80E auto tranny too...with a crawler 203 setup.
Thanks,
-Brett
LCexplorer 10-22-2001, 11:02 PM When I was in Australia, I saw a few of these conversions in the magazines. A couple of companies were even selling conversion kits. I'll see if I can dig up some info as to who and what but I think it best to check with the wheelers down under.
Your best bet would be marks 4wd adaptors. or advanced adaptors they are sold as in the US
I have seen an unsuccesful attempt to put a 6.2 in FJ40. I can put you in touch with the guy if you want. Its all for sale. Steering looked to be a bit of a problem.
On the other hand I have a friend that put a Mitsubishi in a FJ55 and it worked out well.
He used scout steering. The Mitsubishi is almost the same size and weight of a 2F. He is getting around 18 MPG.

Wow, I want to hear more about that swap. Is the snorkel hooked up to the air cleaner somehow?
What's the weight diff between the 2F and the Mitsu diesel?
Does he still have the 465 behind it?
Tell him I said Hi.

cruiserbrett 10-23-2001, 12:39 PM The mitsubishi sounds very interesting. what did the motor come out of? What is the diplascent of the mitsu and is it a turbo? Thanks for the info! Would the friend be interested in sharing the info?
squeezer 10-23-2001, 10:26 PM Best advice on a GMC diesel swap is don't bother.
A 55 is big enough to justify a 6bt Cummins if you want power or a 4bt if you want millage. They can be had with NGV4500 behind them or Chevy adaptations.
Do it right go with an inline diesel.
Chris
cruiserbrett 10-24-2001, 07:20 AM The Cummins 6bt diesel is the 5.9L correct? Would it fit? It looked too long to me when eyeballing the different diesel ideas... Why not the GMC? I know the 6.2 diesels were a more than a handful of problems, but I've heard the 6.5 improved upon the 6.2's problems...
LC Hamma 10-25-2001, 12:56 PM I have seen an unsuccesful attempt to put a 6.2 in FJ40. I can put you in touch with the guy if you want. Its all for sale. Steering looked to be a bit of a problem.
I would be interested in hearing the problems
he had w/this conversion. I have a 6.2 & with
scout p/s it seems like it would all fit in
there nicely. I've seen big block LC's before
in an FJ40 engine bay & these two are very
similar in size.

LC Hamma 10-25-2001, 01:40 PM Thanks, Bennett! Here's a
boilermaker for 'ya.
squeezer 10-25-2001, 08:40 PM I won't go into all the Chevy Diesel bashing that some folks seem to love. Got some good service out of a 6.2 in a Crew cab dually.. The problem with the 6.2 and 6.5 is they are a fairly light duty design. They can run well in a light application but do not have the strength that a decent inline diesel will have. If a person is going through the effort and expense of a diesel swap a B series Cummins is by far the best chioce. Another OK choice would be a 6AT Cummins. 3.4L inline 6 they run fairly smooth for a diesel.
I don't think the drive train could hold up to a cummins 4 or 6......what do you think?
I see those big six cummins tearing 1-ton trannys and frames apart. My choice would be a Isuzu NPR 4 cylinder, I understand some of them mate to sm465s.
Bundok 10-25-2001, 09:17 PM You got a point about the Cummins motors tearing stuff up, but remember that people work theirs diesels very hard. Another point, Dodge is known to make weak frames. I have a `92 CTD Dodge with over a 100K never had a problem. Never used as anything but car to drive to work in though. If you beefed up the trans and transfercase a 55 would be fine. From what I have seen and heard, 55 frames are the stongest of all Cruiser frames including FJ45's. But that's just my oppinion..
squeezer 10-25-2001, 09:53 PM You will only put as much torque thru the driveline as your rubber will put to the ground... Its very possible to tear things up with a heavy foot and a ton of torque. I would rather have it and have to think about how to use it than not have it
As far as the NPR 4 cylinder... Isuzu makes a damm fine diesel. But if a guy is going to go with a small 4 why not turbo a 3B. A little tougher to find than the Isuzu but total effort on a 3B would probebly be less...
cruiserbrett 10-25-2001, 10:35 PM Thanks for the info... I have heard the 4 cyl cummins rattle too much... Looking for something to use a daily driver sometimes. Anyone with any experience with Mitsubishi diesel pictured above? Looks like a good fit and it's turbo I would like something that would be happy doing some towing(an FJ40 on a trailer but not often and not heavier than that) but also be smooth enough for daily driving. where can I find the Mitsubishi's??? Any one tried to swap in a 1HD-FT toyota diesel?

cruiserbrett 10-27-2001, 11:22 AM Anyone had luck with the "H" series Toyota engines? What is the 1HZ? Is it turbo?
Rick, I tried to email back but got sent back twice...

Aaron Leach is
this guy (http://www.geocities.com/Baja/3480/). Royal Rose is the owner of the mitsubishi-diesel-powered FJ55 pictured above.
I think.
Morgan
Royal is going to do a write up on the Mitsubishi for Toyota Trails. The eninge he used was offered through Dodge. They are a little tuff to come by. They were available in Dodge pickups in the late seventys or early eighties I think.
Royal mated it to a sm465. I drove it and liked it, I think it would be killer in a 40.
