at 1:00 Mountain standard time I'm heading out to find a decent CB and I was wondering what you guys have paid for yours. waht kind they are, how you like 'em...but mostly how much I should expect to pay for a decent one.

Anyone eve been to a truck stop that sold CB's they seem to have the best selection, but I Don't know about the prices.

So..............$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$????

PS: I tried doing a search for CB's but it's under the 4 letter/word minimum.

I've got a radioshack CB I got for like $25. I got the firestik antennas and some good cable. The cable and antenna is where you want to spend your money! CB's are pretty much standard unless you want all the bells and whistles like the weather capabilities. There is only a certain amount of power that the FCC lets you broadcast at, and I have yet to see a CB that doesn't put out the max power even the el cheapoes. www.firestik.com has some good info on CBs and such (it's big so it'll take some time).

1. Cheap CB
2. GOOD coax
3. GREAT antenna
4. Amp for power :cool2:

Seriously, spend your money on good cable and a GOOD tunable antenna, and have it all tuned and matched up. I added a 135 watt linear amp to mine - gets out when others can't :)

SWEET info guys, I was already gonna get a fire stick antenna. Does it help to have more than one antena??\

DRM~ Where can I get a linear amp? and how much do those run.'

PS: I have about $250.00 to run through is this gonna be enough?

By good cable you mean the cable from the antenna to the CB or for the CB power??

Both really. Run a good clean power lead to the CB, especially if you intend to have a linear amp on it too.

Techincally - linear CB amps are"illegal" according to the FCC... but I would not worry too much. As for where to get one, search eBay, your local trader paper, CB shops, etc....

They are the key to really getting some distance out of your CB when you need it (i.e. finding people lost from the group, emergency, etc.)

take it from a truck driver and buy a cobra.. i run a classic 25 i got off ebay for $50 delivered.. with a firestick and a cobra youll get about 3 miles of usable range.. you can get a 200 watt amp for around $100 that will increase your range ten fold if you shop around...
the difference in brands isnt the power since you can only leaglly run 4 watts the difference is in sound quality... those guys you here talking but cant understand are using el cheapo units... not to bash uniden or anything but my $30 uniden is laying on the side of I-81 somewhere :flipoff2:

by all means get your sustem tuned itll work a lot better...

I had a Uniden President HR2510 opened up to transmit on AM, and pushing 38 watts. I had that radio hooked to a Wilson 5000 magnet mount antenna (SWR at .5, could have gone lower but wanted the radio to have to work a little bit) and could reach 40 miles. Tri-Cities, WA to Hermiston, OR.

Piad $250 for the radio with the work already done to it, and $100 for the antenna brand new.

I run a fairly expensive set up, but it works very well.
I bought a Galaxy DX66
and Texas Star 350 Linear, form an online shop in Virginia for $350. he threw in my choice of antenna, soldered coax and mike with the deal.
The units came tweaked and peaked with upgraded finals and opened clarifiers. As Dave mentioned, it is illegal, but I do not use the linear for casual conversation, or to show off with the truckers. But it will broadcast to Means Dry lake bed from nearly any spot on any trail in Johnson Valley. And it has solved many logistics problems regaurding parts, or missing rigs on the trail, more than once.
The company was called "Bernies CB" but the site is no longer out there. I can give you the phone number when I get home on Wednesday, if anyone needs it. Bernie is a very nice guy, and really know his shinola, or as he used to say, " Ill tune that box till it blows blue smoke"( I guess thats a good thing, cause it sure does perform).

Shaker,
Can I get a number to your shop? I need to put together a high quality, well performing set up for my Motorhome, for when we use it as the base camp radio.
I have had a lot of trouble contacting bernies lately(have you ever heard of him, his address was out of Roanoke if I remember correctly) .
In any case I would like to contact you, about a new system.
Thanks,

The next CB that I am gonna get is gonna be one of those Cobra units that the actual CB goes under the dash or in the glove box and the only thing that you have in the cab is the handset with controls on it.

I think those are bad arse. I know they are probably pretty expensive or whatever but the idea of not having the box part of the cb just seems so neat:eek:

I run a Midland 79-290, with the detachable face. It's always given me problems, but I've never really concentrated on fixing it either. First I thought it was the vehicle, then the power system, then RF from my ignition. Slowly working my way through the systems.

Anybody else running one of these, or have any input on the unit?

I got a Midland, a few months ago from a freinds shop in Las Vegas. It was the model that slides in and out of a car radio type of bracket, for an indash look. Man what a piece of crap that unit turned out to be. I thought I had a grounding problem, (it would hum like a damn high power transformer), I changed antennas, coax, tried a different mic, then one day, when we carravanning the Motorhome, and tow rig from Vegas to Sacto, I got pissed and whacked it, and Kathy came back on the channel, and said it sounds good now,...that lasted about 10 minutes and went back to humming. I finaly pulled the Gallaxy out of the Jeep and wired it up for the rest of the trip, it worked fine.
The Midland is the unit I need to replace in the MH with a nice tweaked radio.

A BIT LONG

So off I headed to CABELLA'S in Sidney, NE only to find that all they sold for in-dash units was a Midland unit for $120.00 and I wasn't about to pay that. Off I went grab a bite to eat at a nearby truck stop. Loe-and-behold they have an entire CB & CB ACCESSORIES department.

So here's what I picked up

Cobra CB head unit: $75.00 on sale for $65.00
4' FirestickII Tuneable of course MSRP $23.00 for 17.99
18' of the recommended RG-58 A/U type coaxial cable for 9.00

SWEEET!!!!! now all I need is and antenna mount, and some time down the road an AMP!

But here's the rest of the story........

Since I only spent $90.00 on the in-dash CB set-up I decided to head back to CABELLA'S and see what I could find with the rest of the money burning a hole in my pocket. So I finally headed home with the following:

1- New 48" (I belive: second from tallest) Hi-Lift Jack (since my other burned in the fire :(
2- Farm/4x4 use 27,000 lb!!! tow strap, No metal hooks on ends of course ;)
3- Hand-held full power (4 watt) midland 40 channel CB!! FOR HALF OFF!!! :D:D so now there's no need for the motorola TWO WAY!
4- 9.4oz foldable heavy duty (and feels that way too, really sturdy) camping saw. I had one of those K-Mart cheapies and it "FOLDED" on me...

Needless to say I'm super STOKED and would like to thank ALL for their help and input.

PEACE :usa:

   You wouldn't want to send me that for Christmas would you??? I just checked the money tree and it's bare. If anybody is interested, these are damned good radios. I would highly suggest you pick it up if you are in the market for a high end unit with lots of reliable power. It has upper and lower side bands, CW, AM, and FM. Lots of freqs. Don't remember all of 'em right now. Backlit LCD screen and it can take a bit of rattlin around in the 4x4. The only thing that would make this radio any nicer is buttons that are backlit like the screen. Yes, they are hard to find now. ;)

these are not the best radio to use....they are not "filtered" worth a crap. the only thing that helps these are a High end stereo filter to get rid of the noise (ignition whine). Get a Cobra/Uniden/Galaxy/Northstar very good radios....:D :D
