Off the top of my head (without searching): front 80 series axle is ~8 inch size, but because it's reverse rotation, high pinion, I don't think other thirds can really work in it without some mods...
Bifields are biger than older Cruisers birfs, but because of the fulltime 4WD the 80s have, Bobby wasn't recommending them to be treated, but if you don't run it fulltime 4WD, I don't see why it couldn't be done.
Hi-steer is available from only one place I can think of: Over The Top--and it's bad-ass lookin'.
As to width, there was a thread recently and I think it was determined to be something like 63".
As to the best years, the axle was basically the same through all the 80 series years but, 91-92 had drum brake rears and no option of diff-locks and 93-97 had disc brake rears with option of diff-locks. Personally if I were going through the trouble, I'd make sure to find a diff-lock axle.
HTH. I think it's all right, but hey, it's late and I'm tired, so if I'm wrong: :flipoff2:

get in touch with bjowett from this board.
He has fj80 axles with coils under his 86 4runner. He should be able to help you out.

Common swap for the mini guys.
If Bobby won't treat them, someone out there will (smurfield, etc)
The 8" in the front is reverse cut (high pinion) so it takes a unique set fo ring gears that are stronger than standard 8" ring and pinions when used in the front (unless you are backing up)
Anyway, with a light rig like a 4 runner, this is a sweet swap.
