: Help Identifying Flat Tops

Hey Fellas!

I picked up a pair of flattops REAL cheap, so if they won't work, I will survive. I am sure they are Ford, but don't know if they are F250, or possibly SuperCab F150. I have read Mr.N's Dana article and Flat Top article many times, but I still can't determine the differences between these two types of knuckles. I am hoping they are the SuperCabs, because I have all new 1/2 Ton rotors and brakes reasy to go.

What are the ways to tell the difference? One pic in Mr.N's article shows that the SuperCab knuckle may only use two bolts through steering linkage, whereas the F250 uses three. Is this correct?

BTW: I would like to send out a special thanks to Mr.N!! Your information has been priceless to a web wheeler like myself!!

Thanks for any help here guys!

Those are going to be heavier duty F250 knucks'you can tell by the stud size and the 5 bolts if I remember right the lighter duty ones have 6 studs if I am guessing right they should 8 lug rotors
and the 2 piston calipers of the mid to late 70's type

Ford's have 5 lugs for the spindles. Chevy uses the 6 lugs for the spindles

ahhhhhh but the early ford drum D44's have a 6 bolt spindle;)
and that is why we can use chevy small bearing spindles and backing plates with ford rotors to have disc brakes :flipoff2:

Will F250 flattop knockles work with a dana 44 from a 79 bronco? What years of 250's should I look for to find these knuckles? Are both sides drilled and tapped for high clearance steering? thanks, sorry for the slight hijack!! Judd :D

ya they'll work. I have them on a '79 RC 44 from an F-150, same front end. If you get them with spindles, just watch out for which spindles you have. There is the standard 44 and the heavy duty 44. The HD 44 spindle is longer for the external mount hubs.

As for year, I'd guess at '76-'79, not to sure on that though, but it's a start

Thanks for the help guys! I agree, they probably are F250 knuckles.

But it would be nice to know how to ID the Supercab Knuckles, without being attached to the truck. Can I look up the D/S Part number somehow? Anyone got a Dana book and could help me out?

Thanks Again Guys!

The F150 Supercabs D44s are kingpin, not balljoint...really easy to tell the difference;)

Look like F250 knuckles to me.

Any chance you can return your parts and swap? I know I brough in a started 2 years later (still unused in box) and the place let me swap for another brand.

If your set on 1/2 ton set up your best bet is to get 1/2 ton knuckls. Others will post it can be ground, but I'd say only for a trail only off roader.

Mr.N, Can you elaborate? Why are F150 knuckles better than F250? Are the 150's already perfectly flat on the pass. side?
TIA

The 3/4 ton, F250, knuckles will not fit the stock F150 calipers. So in this case the the F250 knuckles will not work. So to use his other Ford parts the F150 from a SuberCab is the best bet. Or use some tricks the EB guys use for running CHevy brakes.
Follow my link and find the flat top info, then read the links I have.
Better read it soon, the Page is going away
Yep, it will no longer be at that addy soon.

I WANT to go 8 lug on a 1977 d44hp
so I can mill the 76-79 f250 knuckle for crossover steering?
all 76-79 d44 will have ps knuckles that can accept a steering arm?

doesn't it seem a little pointless to try and get Americans to spell french words correctly when they cannot spell english words correctly?

British English, Australian English or American English? And If you are going to knock someone's spelling shouldn't you at least try to capitalize correctly?

what bout the difrent axle tubes, 77.5-79 dana 3/4 ton dana 44s have 3" axle tubes, half ton dana 44s have 2.75" tubes, wouldnt this also mean the knuckles arent easily interchangeable between the two.

thos knuckles are indentical to the ones on my 78 3/4 ton camper special and the 78 reg 3/4 truck that i pulled my axle out of.

i also have a set of the 1/2 ton knuckles off a 1979 ford dana 44 and am wondering if i can bolt a high steer arm on it.

West747, Most likely I doubt you have the right knuckles for the flat tops. Only the Supercab F150 had the right knuckles. Some will argue that you can put them on regular f150 knuckles but I wouldn't be willing to bet my life or yours on it. You might want to check out Mr. N's page on knuckles and Billa Vista's pages. Both are wonderful and you can find them with just a little searching. :)
