: bit of white under oil fill cap
is this a definate bad HG or could it be caused by a bit of condensation from being parked for a few days?
i dont have any other HG symptoms, no overheating no leakage, no oil in water that i can tell.
this is a new motor with about 3k, fresh machine work and factory HG and seals
Lord Orange 12-29-2003, 02:49 PM White means bad......at least in under the oil cap.
mobil1syn 12-29-2003, 02:52 PM did you set your oil cap down on something, your oil look ok?
i set my dipstick on a wet lawn on my first car, started flipping cause i thought i had a blown HG. something to consider.
montezuma 12-29-2003, 03:17 PM I recently went through this with a 3.0. I was loosing water, there was water on the bottom side of the oil cap, but there wasn't any water in the oil in the lower end. Turned out to be a cracked head. Do a pressure check on the radiator, and see if you are losing any pressure.
so far i dont see any signs of oil in the water or water in the oil.
i am burning some oil, but i am not losing water.
that i can tell anyway.
i rechecked the head bolts at 1000 miles and all were tight.
greengo 12-29-2003, 04:08 PM depending on how cold it gets where you are at, it could just be condensation. i get the white film on the oil cap of my car and 4 runner during the winter here. usualy only when its around -5* and colder. it could be because they both sit for two weeks out of the month, but i only notice it in the winter time.

yeah it was freezing while the rig was sitting, so i am really hoping/thinking that is what is going on.
like i said it is minor, most of the caps that i have seen with blown HG are NASTY under there, grimy looking with dripping white, mine is just a couple specs..
any more input is mucho appreciated
Rescue 12-29-2003, 07:57 PM It can also depend witch oil youre using. If it has a detergent in there it can foam up... open the rad cap and check the fluid level often. if it doesnt go down youre probably ok.
yooper 12-29-2003, 08:03 PM This can happen if you mostly take short drives, like a 5 mile daily drive to work - the engine doesn't get hot enough long enough to get rid of the little bit of condensation. Take it on a long trip, like an hour or more, several times, and see what happens.
It is normal condensation for this time of year. Don't worry about it.

EWong 12-30-2003, 09:03 AM Could just be normal condensation.
Could be signs of a HG starting to go...
My 22RE did that VERY slightly off and on before the HG went with a bang one night. (at 250K its not too surprising I suppose)
My HG failed on the #1 piston. The "fire rings" had eroded on the back side? and the water seeped into the #1.
No major damage - got a valve job and stuck it back together. 100K later still running but I think the rings are getting weak....

Watch the Calrocs coverage, I hope there will be a pic or two of the buggy!
crewchief 12-30-2003, 11:31 PM Are you running Pennzoil. I have seen pennzoil turn white if it hasn't been changed in a long time.
