I really want to buy the PS2, I'm just really worried about how much time I will blow on the thing.

I've never gotten into video games, but my nephews got the ATV and RC mx games and I was hooked:eek:

the speed of the xbox exceeds the ps2.. 233mhz to 700something.. You have a 8gig harddrive on the xbox, where you can copy cd's too.. You can upgrade the xbox with a chip and a new hd(160gig)*requires a decent amount of comp knowledge* and you then can burn Movies, CD's and entire games to the xbox.. rent them.. burn them.. and never look back

For the most part yes.. but there will be some that dont.. Halo is a perfect example.. Only for the xbox and PC.. and by the way.. multiplayer on Halo is way better than the game

Hah! Irony. I haven't owned a gaming system since sega genesis first came out in 92 or so. I didn't care for it then. Lots of the guys I work and travel with have the PS2, as well as a guy I lived with a few years ago. I've never personally played the x-box or gamecube, but I will volunteer that the ps2 fully kicks ass. I bought mine on wrestling day (the 26th) on sale at radio shack.

I went out and bought SOCOM 2 and damn if I've seen sunlight up until this morning.

A direct quote from a guy I work with who has PS2 and X-BOX:

x-box is twice the power and slightly better graphics, but sony has all the best games and a more reliable system. depends what he wants it for mainly, X-box has a build in 50 Gig hard drive you can copy songs from cd's onot its hard drive and use it as a stereo also with no need for memory cards. but all in all,,, playstation is the way to go.

Gamecube:

its cheep, good if your a chick or only like to play G rated games or sports games

I don't really picture myself as an avid video game player, but damn, this thing is fun. I vote PS2

I have both, and will probably never play my PS2 again (well only for a couple games).... If I had to do it from scratch, I would not get PS2- I would get Xbox.

If you can spend some time at the stores with working displays (best Buy, Toys R Us, etc.) and check out the games you want, that would make your decision for you.

The graphics on the Xbox are waaaayyy better than PS2, BUT you can only take advantage of them with a good TV, so don't buy the Xbox for the graphics unless you havea TV to back it up;)

I'll say it now since nobody else has yet. I've seen a lot of problems with PS2's. The CD trays tend to start skipping in later life. WHereas the laser will not read properly and games that you dumped an hour into will no longer move forward. The controllers continually lose little pieces of their insides and can be heard rattling inside the housing and getting stuck behind buttons. PS2 is getting on in its years, and it may just be a better idea to wait for a new model, one which hopefully will be built better, or get the Xbox.

As was said earlier, go somewhere with working displays and play both systems. Someone said they like the XBOX controller better whereas I can't stand it and feel the PS2 controller is far superior. Mostly a matter of opinion on some of the stuff. There is however no doubt the XBOX has better graphics and the PS2 has more games for it. Checkout the gamecube too for that matter, my older brother loves his whereas both his sons never play it.

Edit: I actually think I blew up one of my controllers today. I was laying on the couch watching a dvd. I had the controller in my hand and was getting up, dragging my leg over the edge of the couch when all of a sudden I got zapped on my finger that was resting on the L1 button. All of a sudden the controller wouldn't work. Guess I'll have to bring my ESD gear home from work. :D

Having played all 3 systems all I can say is XBOX! It is far superior system and even though the PS2 has more games, all the new games coming out are made for both systems. I just bought the XBOX last week, 2 games, 2 controllers and the remote for using it as a DVD player for $210. I think that it was a good deal.

edit XBOX is gaining in market share, it has already surpassed the gamecube for systems in household. They are rapidly closing in on PS2.

Anyone tried this yet?
BTW, here's all the X-box specs too.:D

From http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/
The Xbox is a legacy-free PC by Microsoft:
• Intel Celeron 733 MHz CPU
• nVidia GeForce 3MX
• 64 MB of RAM
• 8/10 GB hard disk
• DVD drive
• 10/100 Ethernet

As on every PC, you can run Linux on it.

An Xbox with Linux can be:
• a full desktop computer with mouse and keyboard
• a web/email box connected to TV
• a server or router
• a node in a cluster

You can either dual-boot or use Linux only; in the latter case, you can replace both IDE devices.

And yes, you can connect the Xbox to a VGA monitor.

Can't do it yourself? We can install Linux on your Xbox - for free!

come awn!!
where are all the PS2 supporters??

you guys are probably right and i would love an X-Box if i went and bought it. But i still like my PS2. I think i paid like $300 for it when it first came out.
sure i have to take it apart once a month and clean the laser lense.
sure i can't play DVDs pn it anymore.
i'll stick w/ it and have faith in Sony to come out with hard drive upgrades, fancy chips, or maybe some V.R. super futuristic electronic bling-bling like they claim???

PS2 is good for long, drawn out, overly complicated RPG games if your into that
i confess the counters don't go up high enough to record the amount of time i have wasted on Final Fantasy games

who knows
maybe i'll just get an X-Box

I had a PS2 back around 1990 or so, it had a monochrome 640x480 monitor and a single density 3.5" floppy drive. No hard drive either!

We had lots a games on it but they really sucked, ya wanna buy it? It's still in my sisters bedroom at home! I'll give ya a deal

This is gonna hurt, but I actually have to agree with MR4WD for the first time EVER!

I've been playing SOCOM for a while, and recently got SOCOM II. Where the X-Box has Halo, SOCOM is the game that sets the PS2 apart. I'm not a big gamer, but getting online with it and playing against other humans ROCKS! I've tried other games with it, but I always go back to SOCOM!

Speaking of which, it would be pretty cool to get some PBB'ers together for online play. :D

i love my ps2, and i just got SOCOM. im hooked. still trying to learn how to play it, but i know ill be spending tons and tons of time with this one. im holding off on SOCOM II until i at least learn how to play the first one.

tiger woods pga tour 04 is awesome too, especially the online play. i love it. steep learning curve, but its a good video game.

the wife plays the ps2 more than I do! (she's off for xmas break, teacher) she got one of the final fantasy cames (#10 i think) and its non stop. cheesy, not my style, but im glad we both enjoy it.

i vote ps2..

Santa bought my oldest boy (6 yo) a PS2 and a bunch of Games. I have been playing ATV Offroad Fury 2 for days now and my thumb is killing me from the whole "preloading the jumps" deal. The physics are killer, I can throw this 4 wheeler around like I did my MotoX bike before I got Phat! I guess having a sore thumb is easier than being sore from riding all week long! If you ain't wreckin' you ain't going fast enough!:D

Tough decision. Having been playing a PS2, and just now trying a xbox, i think i will purchase a xbox.

My kids have all three and the X is the best for all around play...
if you have the little handheld game, you cna play those on the cube...

But on my 48" HDTV the X rocks...HALO is really cool...

Right now Best Buy had X with 2 controllers and two games for $179.00 killer deal....

after spending years playing video games i vote easily for the xbox. socom is cool but you miss out on halo and stuff. the hard drive on the xbox rocks, i am always downloading new levels for my games so they never get old, plus the xbox is online ready (ps2 is not) and has a way better online setup than the ps2. also like said, most games are on both, but the xbox version is almost always (if not always better). ever play rainbow six 3 (my favorite game ever), ghost recon, or splinter cell on the box, way better than the ps2 versions

We bought one for our son (and me) for Christmas. I have played ATV Offroad Fury 2 so much my thumb hurts from doing the preload!

I have been playing Pro Supercross at Battle Creek in Expert mode. I select the Rogue Talon that has Flames and I tweak it up to have full accelleration and skid and hard suspension. I can clear any jump combination I can throw at it! On battle creek - I like to triple the first jump into the corner, then I triple in and double out of the second set of jumps. I jump completely over the "seat jump" and round the corner and heres where it gets fun... I can jump the next series of jumps completely into the last "dip", then I pop it once more, jumping into the corner! This is totally awesome! It took some time to get this down, but this section of the track is where you can majorly make up some time.

Killer game - just like the physics of riding a real motox bike - without the pain the next day (besides your thumb!).

Post up some lap times!:D

Personally, I would tell you to check the local paper and pick up one of the game heads liquidating an old PS1 and about 50 games for like $50 :p

Then, by the time you are tired of those 50 games, you will be able to buy an xBox and PS2 for $50 each with a bunch of games too :D:D:D

Seriously... it works, and is a HELL of a lot cheaper.
