: Steering column rubber thing

Anybody find a better steering column assembly? I replaced mine a year ago on my 93 RRC and the damn rubber donut is split again. I did buy an aftermarket last time, but I don't think it was anymore of a POS than the genuine part, it's just a dumb design.

What if I just run bolts through the steel plates surrounding the donut? Or is there a rubber-free column from an older model that will fit

Not used in early rangies - it accomodates flex between firewall and chassis.

The early RR had a solid shaft with no rubber and could cause a few problems. The steering in my 77 would occasionally lock when accellerating whilst turning, NOT a good thing to happen (This was also partially due to the collapsed bush at the bottom of the column). I replaced the steering column & shaft with a late 80's unit with the rubber donut and it has made a world of difference. I personally would not go back to a solid shaft, but have one in my shed which you can have if you want to pay for shipping from NZ.

That's what I needed to hear, thanks guys. Didn't know if it was just a comfort thing. I'll be shopping for a new one.

I don't see why you couldn't use the same parts from a Disco...

FWIW-I have just begun to notice significant wear on these parts on trucks brought in.

These die a lot. 40 bucks from the dealer. Will cause wander, death wobble and just plain death. If they break completely, the steering is still connected, just with 1" or more of play.

If you saved your old one, send it to me and I will rebuild it with some better flex material. Look at the Chevy section in Pirate, maybe they talk abut rebuilding their "shafts"

Look in the HELP section at the parts store for the steering couplers there. the smallest one fits. It does require some fiddling. But some good results can be obtained.

What say ye' PTS, eh. These socks to big for you?

What do you get for $40? My buddy at the dealer told me it's only sold as a complete assembly, and you don't want to know the price. However, that was based on the original part for my vehicle.

I'll put in whatever fits, if it's from a Disco that's fine, I'm not proud :flipoff2:

I'll check the HELP stuff too, hadn't thought of that.

Thanks

Nope, I'm pumpin' those sox out quite regularly (:flipoff2: ) these days, although the Rovacom merely confuses the issue more.

Given the setup of the Disco, I'm confident it could be retrofitted, although, I'm too lazy and comfy to go out and take a looksee at one of the Rovers in the driveway (no room inside at the shop and no fence outside, so we store them at the house, good thing the backyard is huge, eh?).
