My welds are going from great to very porous instantly; can anyone tell me what is going on?

Thanks

Check your gas supply.

Thanks Scout, I tried turning the gas completely off and it had a totally different effect( less pitting and seems to fry everything) so I discounted a gas problem.

That is definately a gas problem. Is it windy where you work? Check your gun and make sure the tip is clean, also that can happen if you hold the gun too far away from the metal. It is a lack of shielding gas problem

i'd check the tip, and by just depressing the triger and not welding, listen for constant gas supply.

Make sure there isnt a bunch of crap in the gas passages in the gun. Definitly not getting the coverage of the sheilding gas.

Yep Gas.

Check the path the gas travels inside the nozzle as well as the holes inside where the gas come sout sometimes metal flakes and other crap finds its way back in there.

What machine are you running? On Miller 210/250 machines, if the end of the gun/hose thats in the machine, opposite end from the trigger, is pulled out slightly, it won't match up with where the gas comes into the liner/hose. Gas just get's released inisde the machine and doesn't reach the hose. Make sure that it is fully seated and the release knob inside is tight. Also, on some Miller machines, at the machine end of the liner, there is a small o-ring on the brass fitting at the end of the liner, make sure that o-ring is in good shape. :)
