I picked up a freebie tcase for my Willys wagon and I understand that the unit requires some kind of special lube. True? And why?

its for the viscous coupling in it, basicly its like LSD additive. Personally I would take that case and throw it as far as possible. anything associated with Quadra-trac has a tendancy to fail

Chains and alluminum case, if you don't replace the expensive chain often it will break, or skip and the built up momentum will snap the case. I know it can be avoided but in anything heavier then a Cj with more power then a stock I-6 I foresee much preventative mantnance in your future. Keep it simpler nad find a gear driven iron case and enjoy! there low range also sucks if it even has low range

Okay, I guess my next question is which full-time xfer is the best in terms of durability and/or reliability. The box is going into my DD which is being built for comfortable driving on the highway, mild desert wheeling and maybe to tow the Jeep. You know the type . . . Power everything, AC, cruise, pile carpets, dark tinted windows, 3.73 axles . . . a real poseur pimpmobile.

qtrac is pretty stout. AMC stuck it on full size jeeps and Jtrucks (gvwr from 6000 to nearly 9000 lbs). it can handle mucho torque. walk on over to www.ifsja.org and ask those guys, they'd know more about 70s qtrac than most people on p4x4. low range is 2.57:1 (not shabby at all for a stock vehicle) and the qtrac can run around in low range on pavement because of the differential-type action of the case. there is also a lockout switch that will lock the case for part time 4wd use. the rear differential has to be offset to the pass. side a few inches because of the output of the case. the front shaft is pass. drop.

what kinda axles does your jeepster have? 30/44 combo? the qtrac might require the output shaft from a FSJ th400.

if you swap in the qtrac case, you might need the output shaft, a new rear axle, and some vacuum lines.

there is also a part time conversion kit from milemarker.

Thanks for the info, WP. Hardware's not a problem . . . I got a TH400 and an offset D44 with the Qtrac . . . You know, free to a good home.

BTW, this stuff's going into my Willys Wagon - I got real gears in my Jeepster - T18A/D20 soon to be joined by a Klune
