: just another flat bed (pics)
It's not completely finished.... I have some 1/8" aluminum for the sides and expanded steel (mesh) for the floor. Gonna cap the ends and weld a few tie down hooks on the rails. It's a little heavier than I wanted but still Much lighter than the rusted out original bed.

Any pics? That's sounds kinda like what I'd like to do. I thought about doing that with 1.75" round tube.
Bill Collins 01-02-2004, 09:23 PM i have a few pics that might help, but i will have to get my wife to scan them and post monday.she works 16 hour shifts on weekends and me and the kids are going camping.
i used the rec.tubing because i had a chop saw and no bender, but it starts at the outer edge at the cab, your bed looks just like mine started.i have 2 runners welded on the inner edge of the fender up to the top to help support, then the runners to the end of the bed...

After six years of wheeling, I thought I would make it look nice again, did some shitty bodywork, new bed, bumper, sliders and going to paint it all one color so we can take it out and screw it up again!!!:D I may wish I'd made my bed wider after I try strapping down a cooler and a weekends worth of gear in the back..... That is why I made mine wide, we go for long trips in it and try and bring all the comforts of home!!!!:D
Looking good CSR, i like the square tubing.
OOP's your bed looks sick, It actually will have some bed space. i like it.
JamisonWorkshop 01-04-2004, 09:47 AM Bed is looking great Oops. Are you going to run a B hoop around the top. Dont want to scratch up the new paint :D
I've been busy working on other parts of the truck, finally got a floor welded in and painted. I also mounted the Hi-Lift so it's easy to get to...
clutter1 03-16-2004, 09:10 PM here's my flat bed .....I too used samurai tail lights

Northwest Tennessee, near Paris.
I just picked up some 1.75" tube today to make a rollbar/headache rack sort of thing on the bed. Steel prices have gotten ridiculously high.
Something like this....

ROCKILLER 03-17-2004, 06:49 PM Im kinda on the fence as far as flat beds, and yes I have run both. one of my main concerns is weight, whytry to make the rear even ligter. youre justscrewing up the weight distribution even more than it already is. what do youguys think?

You're right. The weight adds up fast.
I did some more bending and welding on my bed this morning. Pics are kinda dark, I was under the shadetree where I do most of my wrenching. ;) Still need to add some bracing under the main hoop and beef up the frame mounts. I may use this roll bar as a base for an Exo' later....

Im4yotas 05-08-2004, 01:07 PM Looks good. Curious as to why you didn't lean it forward and follow the cab, though. My X-cab leans way forward, so it'd look like ass if I don't follow it.
But anyways, your junk's lookin real smooth. Keep it up.
Storm Trooper 05-08-2004, 01:20 PM looks good, i really like the looks of you rig with the IROKS, the added bars complete the look big time
Curious as to why you didn't lean it forward and follow the cab, though.
I had the main hoop leaned forward at first but the lip of the sliding window sticks out far enough to cause problems with the diagonal bars, they would have needed to be bent out. It would have probably looked better to lean it forward some but with all the bends on the same plane the main hoop was kinda close to the cab at the lower ends. It was a major accomplishment for a amateur bender like myself to pull off five bends that come kinda close to following the lines of the cab without totally fawkin it up. :smokin:
I'm in the process of shooting some Kawasaki Green at my truck... got the bed painted today, gonna try to get the cab done tomorrow.

jeah that kawagreen looks good!!
i thought of doing mine also kawa-green, but i crash to oft, thats why i need a paint where i can easy paint over it without make it look TOO stupid :D

Tipsy 07-08-2004, 07:05 PM Looks good. What thickness did you use on the square tube. What did you use to extend your gas filler neck.

Thanks! :)
The lower frame is 3/16" and the upper rails are 1/8". Weight started adding up when I welded in the .120" wall round tubing rollbar and expanded steel floor. I haven't weighed the bed but I'd guess it's close to 250-300lbs.
I didn't have to extend the filler hose, it was long enough. ;)
