: You also swap in NISSAN axles in the US???
cybersniper 01-02-2004, 12:22 PM In Spain:
all Defenders end up with 110 rears (D60) and NISSAN fronts or both NISSAN GR/GU axles that are about the stouter we have found .... as big as a D60 or more...
Eduardo
redrangie 01-02-2004, 12:33 PM well, nissan solid axles are about as rare as married man's bj's around the us...
Wish we could.

SeaRover 01-02-2004, 12:37 PM swap my ass - i would have just bought a patrol in the first place! whoops! did I say that? surely not . . . .

JSBriggs 01-02-2004, 02:11 PM So i've heard.....but please, tell more. IE what model/year...

Strange Rover 01-02-2004, 02:44 PM I dont see the point of swapping in nissan gear.
I believe that a nissan CV isnt as strong as a longfield and definately not as reliable fatigue wise. The nissan cv is bigger than a longfield (aspecially in the GU Nissan) but they still suffer badly from fatigue the same way as a stock rover CV. The big nissan CV may be stronger in a one time overload situation but wheel on it hard for a few months and the thing will still break easily.
We see Nissan CVs break all the time here on rigs running 35in tyres although we do have a lot of Nissans and they drive the piss out of them. The fawkers are everywhere. There are a few guys trying to make treated CVs for them but none have been very successful.
Front Nissan axles are nothing like a D60. They got about a 9in crown IIRC and 31 spline axles (same size as a ford 9in 31spline axle) and then they neck down where they go into the cv.

cybersniper 01-02-2004, 03:17 PM You will see what I mean.

We have not broken them??? donīt know why?? because the kind of 4x4 we do is as extreme as it can get...
Sure the front is nothing like the D60 BUT the rear is!!! and the front is stouter than a d44 (even though homocinetics tend to break but are easily replaced).

cybersniper 01-02-2004, 03:29 PM The red Commando has NISSAN axles and won the Euro RAINFOREST selection last Nov. The Black TJ has D60s.

and we have not broken them.
I will try to get one and take pics and measures so we can compare, we may have a different unit here..

Strange Rover 01-02-2004, 04:48 PM If you carnt break a stock nissan CV then you carnt be that extreme. We have very similar types of events here (winch challenge events etc) and our guys dont break them that often but they do break (would see more than one break in any given competition out of say 15 rigs that run nissan axles)
On high traction rock and bigger tyres/lower gearing they are much more easy to break. A mate of mine would break one every competition if he wasnt careful (he was running 39.5in tsls). Mates of mine that run Longfields dont break anywhere near as often -IMO a Longfield is a much better joint.
OK - heres a question - how many times have you seen a Nissan CV twist off an inner axle??? Personally I have never seen it happen....its always the CV that lets go first.
With a Longfield they generally twist off the inner axle which is why people buy high strength alloy inner axles for them.
A Nissan front axle would not be as strong as a built D44 (alloys and CTMs) - not even close IMO.

cybersniper 01-05-2004, 03:32 AM I donīt know much about those NISSAN axles except that they donīt break on my friends rigs and WE ACTUALLY compete on the same type of 4x4 as you do.
Actually Alvaro de Orleans went down under to compete at the Australia WARN CHALLENGE...... he drives a TH with d60s BUT we wheel together all the time .... same kind of 4x4.
I just returned from a business trip but as soon as i sleep a little (jet lag) I will go my my friends shop and ask him .....
I will tell you...
Eduardo
ISUZUROVER 01-05-2004, 06:17 PM Maybe the nissan drivers in Australia just have more of a lead foot Sam :D
It could also be the fact that most of the 4x4's I saw when I was in Spain had smaller engines fitted (usually TD's) than their counterparts in AU (for tax and fuel $$$ reasons I think). I think all the ones I saw were 2.5l TD's or smaller, though I did see one Nissan MQ wagon but I couldn't see what engine it had.
Also from the pics the terrain seems a bit softer and less rocky.
Whereabouts in Espana are you Eduardo??? I am moving to Germany for a few years and would love to come and see some european 4x4ing and check out the rigs over there. I didn't really get to see any when I was in Spain last time.
cybersniper 01-05-2004, 06:33 PM Yes most of the engines in here are 2.5 to 3.3 TDI..... with lots of mods BUT they are what they are.....
We just started installing the first set of V8 engines (apart from Rover V8 units) my friends Chevy 6.5 turbodiesels and me a gas V8 (Ls1 or 5.0).
BUT:
Santi bravo has survived the Croatia Trophy after the V8 install.... I really donīt know why they donīt break !!!
Eduardo
ISUZUROVER 01-05-2004, 10:52 PM IMHO - Sam may disagree - I think the nissan axles are very strong, I have never seen anything break except for CV joints, and in the competitions here the people do drive very hard.
I have seen heaps of comps where GQ and GU patrols with 35+ inch tyres will rev the engines to 3000rpm or so and then side-step the clutch in first or 2nd low to launch up steep hills/walls. This type of rapid loading/acceleration puts an incredible strain on the whole drivetrain. And all the comp nissans here are 4l 6cyl TD's, usually with greatly increased fuelling and intercooler/turbo mods.
So it may just be a combination of factors, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the people over there running nissan diffs eventually break CV's.
