: Questions on the board
kellymoe 01-02-2004, 04:50 PM
I know I will get alot of crap for asking this but here goes. I have recently seen some people taking shit for asking some legit questions IMHO. What type of questions should be asked on this board. I have seen the same reply to the same types of questions at the SCLR board, D-Web, and Rovers North etc. The common reply is " do a search idiot". In my years of Land Rover ownership there are questions that just don't get answered by doing a search, simple or exhaustive. Example a few weeks ago I asked about problems with my new K&N filters on twin SU's. I first did a search and found very little info, most all info I found said what great power increases you get with the set up but nothing refering to the problem at hand. I called a number of British car shops and asked there opinions and got a different opinion with each shop. The problem was too much air wrong needles but when I asked the so called experts what needle is the right needle they all scratched there heads. And when I asked the question here I got alot of crap and very little info. I have since solved the problem by puting on a Edelbrock intake and carb and doing away with the SU's totaly.
I can see the frustration with somone asking how to change the air in there tires or how do you check the oil or change the oil but when someone askes a question that may not be in the owners manual show a little mercy. Workshop manuals aint exactly chump change and all Land Rover owners aint rich.
That said, BRING IT ON!!!
Serious One 01-02-2004, 05:03 PM Kelly,
Even though I hang out here a lot, I wonder the same thing. For instance, I myself have been wondering, "just how much white smoke in my exhaust is acceptable?".
Afraid to ask here and be thrown to the hounds, I have gone through the 'back door' and asked a few people I know won't thrash me for asking such a simple thing.
The Pirate board has a reputation for attracting a certain type of off-roader. Exactly what type of person that is runs the gamut from extreme competition rock-crawler to modified expedition vehicle. Typically the type of person here isn't the kind who ships their truck off to ECR and comes back with a turn-key solution. Folks here typically are MUCH more hands on.
I think that typically when someone new comes along and asks a relatively 'simple' question then there are those who are ready to pounce. Others will help them along and try to get them pointed in the right direction then may or may not so gently suggest a SEARCH.
Sometimes even those who have been here a long time or those who are generally respectable will say something like, "I'm too damn lazy to search, what do you guys think about X???".
I am guilty of this, as are several others. Typically those questions are answered with a little gentle ribbing and some helpful answers.
When someone crashes through the door (figuratively), then expects the PBB to stop in it's tracks and answer a germaine question (realistically), that's when I believe the 'weeding' process begins.
There are a dozen other boards to answer questions like 'how large a tire can I put on a mildly lifted D90', most of the people here ask questions like 'what is the dimensions of the engine bay of a RRC, I'm thining of installing a(n), XXXXX'.
That's just how I percieve the board. If I have 'newbie' questions I try to find the answers on my own (just spent $50 at National Performance on a Q-Jet tuning video and a small-block Chevy performance/buildup book).
So, there you have it (from just one individual, I can't speak for anyone else).
:flipoff2:
kellymoe 01-02-2004, 05:14 PM "Stop in it's tracks" Thats a good one. I know I'm sitting on my fat ass right now. It's not like everyone on this board is hard at work and it is there job to answer questions. As to the rest of your reply I am in complete agreement. I realy do try to figure stuff out on my own and usualy do not want to put up with the harrasing for asking a percieved stupid question. I am a fireman and I have learned from life in the fireouse that you dont show weakness, if you show weakness you become an easy target. I also have learned at hte firehouse that sarcasm is used to cover up ignorance.

what did I MISS?
Oh, and Kellymoe, if you can't afford a shop manual, (25.00 on ebay, 95-125 dealer), stop, do not pass go, and rethink what you are doing. Seriously, everything mechanical is about the prep work, and prep work starts with self knowledge.
I probably have the least amount of disposable rover income here. Even less than 9v/64rover, but I don't whine about it. This sight is not a substitute for the owners manual. It's where you go when you only use the owners manual to remember what the truck was supposed to be like.

kellymoe 01-03-2004, 08:51 AM Disposable rover income? Talk to me when have two kids in diapers. I have not seen disposable rover income in a few years. Unless someone wants to buy my 109. Anyone?
pendy 01-03-2004, 09:05 AM Here I am.
Firehouse, weak, ignorant, sarcastic, firepole, soap. You have issues that we at the PBB can not help you with.
I ran the carburators that were on your Defender in my two door RRC for years. You had a problem with the diaphram in the top of the carbs. They can be bought for less then 8 dollars apiece. Strange Rover and others tryed to tell you this in your post but you were not listening I guess. When someone needs help and second guesses information provided it is anoying. Fact is I noticed a character flaw in you and decided not to help. Now that you have confirmed that I will burn you at the stake.
If I need help figuring something out I do some reasearch. And then I make a few efforts on my own just to rule out some educated guesses. Then when I ask around for help I show gratitude and make an extra effort to LISTEN when people give their opinions. Because in the end there are two ways to skin a Cat. And even the most correct answer is just an opinion. There is something to be LEARNED in the Outlandish and off the wall opinions of even those most uneducated in the topic at hand. When you ask for help build up your story so people see the whole picture. Reveal the research you have done and share the other opinions that have been shared on the subject. If you play games with people that you need information from then you will find that they do not have any to provide.
This is not some game of grab ass at the firehouse. We do not have to be nice to you if the captain tells us to.
Die Lucas is my hero.
Brooke Sheilds is my heroine.

SeaRover 01-03-2004, 09:07 AM kellymoe - look over the rest of this board. 3/4's of the community here exists BECAUSE of the lack of disposable income. cheap-bastard repairs, DIY bootie fab - any thing to keep from spending tons of money or being a bolt on bitch spoiling the potential fun factor with your rig. I am amazed at what some of the Zukie guys can do with 5 grand. seriously - hang out a while before being so quick to pass judgement. you wouldn't walk into a rowdy bar full of people you didn't know, and start dissing them because they didn't want to talk to you? no - you'd keep yer mouth shut the fawk up and observe for a bit. no different here. there are some good people on here, and if you want to build your junk to wheel than stick around. and if you are seriously that broke - buy a scout . . you'll feel rich! :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
-isaac (w/ busted rig since last sept, waiting on truck money to accumulate like everyone else)

Speaking of which...hey, Adam!!! How much allowance you get per week?
kellymoe 01-03-2004, 05:05 PM Pendy, please do not mention the soap and firepoles again, that is an issue I am very sensitive about. As to the character flaw I think if you met me you would realize you are WAY off. I started this post because I was a little taken back by the way XCbiker was treated when he asked a question about a timing chain. I am not judging anyone on this board. If I came across someone on the trail who needed help wether bone stock M-Class or fabricated rock crawler I would help if I could, no questions asked. That is the way I view these types of BBS's. If I don't have anything to offer I don't say anything. As for the diaphprams on the twin carbs. It turns out I just need different needles. The diaphrams are in great shape. All that is a dead issue now that I have the Edelbrock set up.
Bottom line I guess on all this? I think there is enough negative and pissed off people that we all have to deal with everyday. Why does it have to carry over into a group where we all are supposed to have somthing in common.
Call me Mr. sensitive. :p

PBB isn't one of "those" types of BBs.

Maybe XCbiker can learn a lesson here. If someone slaps you in the face, turn the cheek. If they go for a third time reach for their wallet or something similar. That is what it is really all about. THICK SKIN. Do not be offended if someone straps one on and drives it home. Think of it as an oppurtnity to mingle. This is just the internet, not real life.
I hope to run into you on the trail someday. Maybe by then you will have your 350 chev installed and we can laugh together about your old 3.5 lump. I salute you captain.
Thick skin rules
