I just registered mine as a farm vehicle. Cost me like $4 every 6 months. I've got the same liability insurance that i've had, but you can't take out collisioin on it. It doesn't say anything about it on the insurance card that you carry in the truck so when I registered it last week the DMV had no idea that it was registered like that.

Do you still have to do smog checks on a farm truck? Next year I won't be driving it on the street but would like to keep the license and insurance for events.

Since you are in Texas, they have a Farm truck Plate. I asked last year when I paid my $51 and they said it cost the same, had to prove I lived on a farm and that the vehicle was only going to be used for farming. I'll ask again this week when I pay another $51, I haven't yet got a New Mexico address, lower tax and insurance. My "farm" splits the state lines
I want to know if you have Farm truck plates, If you could get a ticket for tires sticking out to far and no mud flaps, bumper hieghts, the stuff they look at in other states When I make a buggy, to make it legal, I would get "Tractor" plates, It would a have IH VIN, I'll ask about that too. It could be one of those things, just haven't talk to the right gov. worker.

what i was thinking was registering it as a farm tractor, like a slow moving vehicle thing, no smog, no noise restrictions, no inspection, no tail lights, hell for that matter no lights at all if i wanted, and insurance would be the same as on a tractor, i live on a rice farm, so i could prove it, i could put some 38's on it and put an orange triangle like the tractors or slow moving vehciles have on the back and classify it as a tractor, just wonderin if anyone had tried this, lookin for cheap loop holes

I registered it under my business address which is in SCarolina and there is no inspection. When I registered I don't think the DMV had any idea I had it insured as a farm vehicle and the insurance didn't have any idea I registered it regular.

Got back from the tax office, Picked up the application for Texas: FARM TRAILER, FARM TRUCK, OR FARM TRUCK TRACTOR LICENSE PLATE.
You have to check one of four statements: the first three really don't apply, for semitrailer and cotton farmers

the last one states the vechicle "will be operated for the purpose of transporting my own poultry...livestock.....and farm products to market or to other points for sale or processing, or the transportation of laborers from thier place of residence, and materialss, tools, equipment and supplies, without charge, from the place of purchase or storage to my own farm or ranch, exclusively for my own use on such farm or ranch. The vehicle will also be used as the means of passenger transportation, without charge, only by members of my family to attend church or school, to visit doctors for medical treatment or supplies, and for other necessities of the home and family. The vehicle will NOT be used in connection with other gainful employment. I further state the description of the vehicle and weight shown above are true and correct.
At the top it has the typical vehicle information: year make model gross weigh #alxes carrying capacity
At the bottom: Signature with Name of Owner, Farm name and address.
The form doesn't have the miles driven from the farm like I was told, the government worker asked questions like "what I would use the truck for?" but that was it. You still have to insure it, and have inspection sticker. The fee on the page show $5.30 but thats on the trailer part.
At the bottom"falsifying information on any required statement or application is a third - degree felony"
The part about " other necessities of the home and family" covers me

Dunno about CA but here in OK you can buy "black tags" or non-use tags, they are black and basically cover what you are looking for. With a black tag you will not have to catch up your back taxes if you choose to sell but you cannot drive a black tag on a public road, they usually are 1/2 the price.

This is also the ticket in OK to catch up your back taxes, just buy non use tags for the past and a good tag for the current. You do not have to get a special inspection to go from black tag to regular here in OK.
