pmurf1 12-23-2001, 09:34 PM I'm still in the HF bender group, but I read the article and think you did a great job on it. If I ever step up to a JD, I'm sure it'll come in handy again. Thanks for taking the time to write it.

The HF bender was $69 delivered to my door, and all I have ever bent with it was making Tcase crossmembers... where IMHO pipe was just fine for the application :p
All of that will change soon.... very sooon :cool2:
arndog 12-24-2001, 07:40 AM Tin bender I thought the write up was excellent. I have it saved to my harddrive in case the world ends I can still use it.
I have not followed it yet as the JD2 is sitting in my garage awaiting space and a nice sturdy mounting point
thanks for the write up
arndog
RE:Todd 12-24-2001, 08:04 AM Rob,
Won't have a bender for a while, but I'm using your layout idea to help with fixing my rolled junk. That bit alone is a god send. Thanks :D:D:D:D.
Bigtoy22 12-24-2001, 08:24 AM rob killer wright up too bad it wasnt 4 months ago. i got to use the math method for building mine, and the mitler bro's software. for all the guys with the HF bender and pipe, once you can afford to step up, do it. you'll see that those materials where never adequate.
Tin Bender 12-24-2001, 10:53 PM BT22... Looks like you got the math thing down good too (nicw cage) now that you got the math down, the 2,3 and 4 plane bends are a snap..
Todd... If you don't have a roof now, the one on my Runner is in good shape, and the glass is too
 (belive it or not.....lol
Really, if you need some help, I've got'n REAL good at cut'n the roofs off and replace'n um....:skull: :D
Tin Bender 12-24-2001, 10:54 PM Oh yeah!! BT22 NICE SIG LINE!!!!
yurtle 12-24-2001, 11:09 PM Can't report on results, but it was a great article and much appreciated. Brought me a lot closer to buying a bender.
One thing my walnut sized brain is struggling with - how do you measure for bends over 90 degrees?
Thanks for taking the time to share
Brian
xextr3m3 12-24-2001, 11:26 PM I can honestly say the first time that I read it I was confused.....but now that I have gone back and reread it....it makes soooo much sense.
Thank you for your time and a great article:beer:
Tin Bender 12-24-2001, 11:34 PM Over 90?..... Bend some 180's, and measure the same way...
fatkid 12-25-2001, 10:09 AM I read your write up and I still thing back pipe is the shiat, I also have one other question. What does the goat in crotchless panties have to do with bending tube? :flipoff2:

Fatkid:rolleyes: its all about the :bender: you know that.:D
fatkid 12-26-2001, 10:08 AM Yes it is...:D
Jason M 12-26-2001, 10:35 AM Helped me a bunch. Of course all I got to figure out now is ohw to bend on the right side of the line!!! :D
I'll post pictures when done :-)
Santa brought me a bunch of new tubing!!!!!

Really, if you need some help, I've got'n REAL good at cut'n the roofs off and replace'n um....:skull: :D I'll do the roof when I cage it, which will probably be February. It's probably cheaper for me to just get a roof down here, due to the distance (225 miles) involved. I'll let you know when I get to that point :D:D:D:D.

Shaker 12-26-2001, 04:41 PM Good article.....It sure will help those guys figure things out easier. I'll admit it has helped me too.....:p When is the "next" article coming..... :D
Who the hell makes this Tube bender dammit ? LOL shit been asking people on here ofr the past two knows either theuy have been asses or just don't know.
Chris
Tin Bender 12-26-2001, 06:51 PM The Bender in my article? It is a JD2.... 1",1.25"1.5",1.75" and 2" 180* dies...
what kind do you have of the JD @ line whta model?
Tin Bender 12-26-2001, 07:08 PM it's a model 3... No hydo, no nothing cept $$ in Dies...lol
I would recomend it HIGHLY!!!
It's peanuts compared to the almost a grand for the dies (yes each) for the new bigger, better , badder, bender..:D:D:D
Tin Bender 12-26-2001, 07:15 PM The new one is VERY NICE....
http://www.mtechsupply.com/view_page.php3?getcategory=Benders&prodid=58
BUT, i still use the JD2 for alot of "other stuff".....
P.S. Price DOES NOT include dies or foot pedal or etc.etc. etc....
yeah i just realized that all the dam dies is what cost a shitload not the bender it self.
and TIN what size dies you have i mean like some are 1 inch from like 3.5-180 and 7.5 - 180 how would you know what exact sizes you need? or have you been doing this that long you just know haha? I'm knew to it all and would like to get a welder soon and get this thing and see hwta i can make is all.
Chris
Tin Bender 12-26-2001, 10:02 PM LOL....
I kinda like the tighter Rad. It makes for a tighter fit and a better look'n cage,IMO... it also gives you the ability to make closer bends (one to the other) like around dashes, seat hoops, etc.
Yes, a bigger Rad. will give you a stronger bend and the ability to do thinner tube. The way I see it though, why would you want bend 65 anyway? exhaust? LOL yeah, I can see it now 1.5" exhaust:D
I got alot to learn about welding and bending shit haha
but one thing i bet i could do really well with the bender is i bet i could make some killer Bongs if i don't do to well in makeing a cage haha. So Tin how long have you been bending and welding stuff ? currious
Chris
Tin Bender 12-27-2001, 06:13 PM How long? That is hard to say, cause i kinda grew up around the shop. Infact, My grandfather, who I spent most of my time with, was an AutoShop/Metal shop/Welding instructor....
(He taught me how to weld when I was somewhere around 9 or 10) My father worked as the welding foreman for Trailmoble and has been a wrench forever....
I got my first welding/fab job when I was 17, build'n Mine'n equipment.....
So, to get to the point and answer your question....Awhile:D
Not as long as some of the guys here, and more then others..
Im4yotas 12-27-2001, 11:11 PM Sure, what's wrong with 1.5" exhaust? All the old VW bugs have it!!:D
pretty cool
Now some say i won't be able to build a rockbuggy but i want to prove them wrong so is it that hard to build one comeing from someone like me who does want to buy a welder and tube bender and start practiceing and try and teach myself maybe even take some classes in welding. Is it possible to build my own rockbuggy or maybe another hole jeep? I have seen one guy who has done a willys body from scracth and he was just a trim carpent had no experiance at all and was able to do it. Now how much hard is a entire tubular rockbuggy frame? Also when people build these things do they do some kinda drawing out or computer drawing shit to kinda guide them along or is it all out there head? Right now i'm in school for automotive technology learning cars and i work at a tranny shop after school being and R&R man but would really like to learn this welding stuff and see how far i can take all this. Is there any advice you could maybe give me to somehwta guide me along? or just get a welder and alot of junk metal and start practiceing?
Chris
Tin Bender 12-28-2001, 07:58 AM IMO...
There are LOTS of classes that would help you get started...
Take a welding class, and properties of metal class, maybe even a structural design class cause it would help a bunch too... You need to have a platform to start from.
But, I think the best way is top get REAL world knowledge...
Work for a Welder/Fabricator in exchange for teaching you the ropes, The BEST people out there DIDN'T learn it from books, THEY LEARN'D FROM IT FROM OTHERS....
:vader2:
Thanks man
Yeah there use to be a welding class at my school but i'm gonna see if i can get it started again rather then swicth schools to learn it. And Welding really wouldn't be so much books would it be? or is it mostly hands on experiance?
Chris
VT_Toy 12-28-2001, 10:44 AM I took an evening welding class at the local vocational school a year or two ago, it not only covered Arc, MIG, TIG and OxyAcetylene welding, but also various forms of cutting and grinding. The instructor was a retired welder, and taught us some good stuff. Definately worth it, and it was about $150. I'm also friends with the guy who's done some welding for me, and he's shown me some good stuff. I think I learn more from doing, watching and asking questions then I would from a book. Though the pictures and straight-talk in Tin Benders write-up made lots of sense, nice job!
Once you learn to manipulate the little pool of molten metal with whatever tool you're using it all makes sense :D
Thanks
yeah i will probally take some classes for sure I could really learn alot i bet.
Chris
