it looked like 3AM-ish on the clock :p
bracing the front shackles like that would really reduce there ability to move ........... but I see your talking about your rear shackles :D
SR5Dave 03-31-2004, 09:29 AM I wouldn't worry about cutting it down (shorter) too much. Head room is good ;) Lookin good!

the recent pics are of the shortend cage, it isn't going any lower. i think he was refering to his front shackles.....they kinna hang down
descendents 03-31-2004, 02:35 PM yea i was talking about the shackles... im gonna brace the rear ones and then the front ill prob have to bend some out of 1/4 stock or do something or therye gonna get bent real easy

914Runner 03-31-2004, 11:15 PM looks good!
West0n 04-01-2004, 04:15 PM I think you should run bracing behind the front seats, similar to what this rig has behind his cab.... would add alot of stability
helps to put a link in:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=230770
Im4yotas 04-01-2004, 07:43 PM 1/4" sucks for shackles. Go 1/2" or at the very least 3/8". The 3rd example of braced shackles you posted was my old rear shackles. Both bent. Here's what happened to my 1/4" front shackles. I now run 1/2" all around.
descendents 04-01-2004, 09:41 PM i have some pretty thick steel from the mounting brackets for my old bling double tube chrome bumper... i think it'll work good for shackles
kelly
roctoy 04-01-2004, 09:48 PM Looks good. Keep the pics coming.

that's all i have for now but the cage is pretty close to being completed
kelly
Kyron 04-11-2004, 12:39 PM How strong is the floor where the back seat is? ..... did you tie it in to the cage?
Hope to see it in action soon
sarge 04-11-2004, 04:03 PM why go through that much hassle with someones old cage:confused: it would be stronger , faster and safer to bend up a new one and it would look better:flipoff2:
descendents 04-11-2004, 08:08 PM cause i don't have a bender notcher etc... i picked up the cage for like $140 i think... a bender, notcher, dyes, tubing, etc would be closer to $500.... it would also be a whole lot more work and with limited time this was the way to go, once i get this up and running and get some spare time + money i probably will design my own and bend it up
as for the back seat the bottom is just bolted to floor which is attached via body mounts.... however the back of the seats will attach to the cage just liek it used to with the metal tab, so the seats will still be able to fold down
the very back of the truck i will not keep the sheet metal as the body mounts have been cut off and i need to cut into anyway for the gas tank ...
kelly
85runnerAZ 04-12-2004, 03:30 PM I would use a strap on handle like this: http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=5305&catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&langId=-1&TID=1544 That way yout passengers won't loose finger when you scrape the rocks.
descendents 04-26-2004, 04:29 PM yea i'll def look into getting some of those... school get out in about a month so i'll be able to work on it then... should be done here pretty shortly
kelly
descendents 04-26-2004, 04:40 PM trying the new red star

85runnerAZ 05-28-2004, 05:43 PM Are you guys gonna pick up some speed on this buildup. Seems like you started a year ago.
Kyron 05-28-2004, 09:38 PM No shit huh??
descendents 05-29-2004, 12:00 AM school just got out... kinda hard with school and working 30 hours a week.... also kinda hard being 17 and trying to afford a crawler... but it should be done in the next month or so
kelly
EDIT: it's only been 5 months anyway.. and comeon it took DRM a year and its not even teh same truck :flipoff2:
Kyron 05-29-2004, 09:49 AM WTF ....... these are the BEST years of your life !!! You better not have a wife and two kids ...... bills out the ass, tring to embessile $$ for your toys.
Every penny from that 30hr job is going to YOU.........
and ya, your right about DRM :D
descendents 05-29-2004, 07:48 PM haha yea most of the money goes towards the crawler.. no wife and no kids.. but im paying off my 93 ex cab toy 4x4 and my insurance co rapes me... its liek $220 monthly... but yea ive saved up quite a bit... just gotta buy duals, extra case, gears, mod rear driveshaft, hydro assist, and some 2" bs wheels...
kelly
85runnerAZ 05-31-2004, 04:29 PM I had a friend at Desert Rat order me up some 2" BS wheels from US Wheel. $25ea plus $5 shipping.
He doesn't work there anymore but call the Tempe store and ask for Rob. Tell him Damen told you to call.
descendents 06-03-2004, 08:03 PM Damen
wish i woulda read that earlier.... i ordered my 5 2" bs ones from uswheel yesterday (through summit) and they were $212 shipped... i dunno if i'd be able to cancel but its not too big of a deal,
thanks for the offer
kelly
Booger Weldz 06-03-2004, 08:18 PM you guys gona feel safe in a roll cage if its all chunks of butt welded spliced together pipe of a cut up, used, misaligned exocage?? i know i made an effort to cut off my cage for a friend to reuse and it was so sprung when it got cut off it was impossible to piece back together/realign...im sure that cage was used good and hard by pmurph...

gtxracer 03-01-2005, 09:48 PM Wow...looks great!
Are you going to cover most of it with sheet?
descendents 03-01-2005, 09:54 PM yea thats the plan.... for the roof im planning on making a soft top that goes all the way back and snaps on... going to be made of the sunbrella type material.. considering having the soft top being able to roll down so you could completly inclose the buggy and the rear storage area
kelly
West0n 03-01-2005, 11:59 PM bout damned time you put those pics up. those welds in the last two pics sure look goot if i do say so myself!!!!!!
It was sooooo much easier welding up the 18 gauge sheet metal instead of the 20 gauge. the front two fenders are the thinner stuff and the welds turned out like crap. Simply too thin of metal onto thick pipe. I'm def. gunna use the thicker stuff for the rest of the body.
I should have the body done by this comming weekend, more pics will come.
91pickup 03-02-2005, 12:23 AM That thing looks awesome. Keep up the good work.

West0n 03-08-2005, 09:03 PM I laugh every time i see that sign of "Ryan flopping"
pmurf1 03-08-2005, 09:22 PM God damn aren't you guys done yet?! You need to hurry up so you can make the Jambo.
If you're gonna do a top and want an easier way than snaps all around, there's an aluminum place on 19th ave/indian school that has premade track made. You take your material and roll it up in some 1/4" swamp cooler bleed line and it slides right in the track, can't come undone. Then you can snap the rest. It's good for the front one where the wind may blow the snaps loose. I used it when I still had a body many moons ago.
descendents 03-08-2005, 09:49 PM only like 3 weeks til the jambo... could be done.. but $70 is kinda pricey to wheel at table mesa and get a couple cheap meals

looking really good, i just scannegd through the whole buildup.
i was a little skeptical when i first saw the old rusty cage, but it seems like you fixed it up enough, as long as it's gunna save your hide in the long run then its good enough.
that rear swing up idea is pretty trick looking.
the descendents? that's awesome, not to many people i know have ever heard of them, especially around here.
we rule.

Kajo4x4toy's garbage..........
derail 01-09-2006, 05:27 PM i m suprised those rediculous shackles havent inverted yet!! change that mount! and that dual shackle setup u showed was backwards, the long shackle goes to the leaf spring. the small one drops down.
XJ618 01-09-2006, 05:36 PM sick buggy, side pannels dont swing open for doors do they?
85runnerAZ 01-09-2006, 09:34 PM Nice angle for the a-pillar. I'd suggest putting the sheet metal on the outside so the tubes don't catch on anything.
85runnerAZ 01-09-2006, 09:36 PM ...and foot holes in the panel to help getting in it.
93yota 01-09-2006, 09:44 PM sick buggy, side pannels dont swing open for doors do they?
