This may be a stupid question but it's got me stumped. I just pulled my 2f, 4spd trans/xfer. After seperating the tranny from the clutch housing, I can't figure out how to get the housing off the block. All the bolts are inside the housing and the two bolts that I can reach back out into the flywheel. The only way I can see to remove it is to remove the clutch, then the housing???? Any info is appreicated. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate have to come off to remove the bellhousing.

Do I understand your question right? I can't imagine wanting to remove the bellhousing without first removing that other stuff.

Morgan is right.
The clutch and flywheel have to be removed before the bellhousing can be unbolted from the engine block.

Yep, get the pressure plate off, then the 4 bolts on the flywheel and remove it and then the 6 bolts on the bellhousing, two outside the bellhousing and 4 inside.

I just did mine the hard way, since my engine was seized, I had to lay the block on its side and remove all the bearings until I could get the crakshaft to rotate so I could get the preasure plate off. A real PITA!!

Good luck!

At least the flywheel is held on by 6 bolts with a reasonable torque. Much better than the 36mm nut that's torqued to 300 ft. lbs. on a VW.

Ha, friggin, ha, Drew! And you thought a hidden head bolt was difficult. How's that rig doing - been wheeling it in the Oklahoma Mountains? <IMG SRC="smilies/laughing.gif" border="0">
