Gonna be putting a 4.3L V6 into my 1990 Toyota w/ a TH350...

Anybody have any connets on what shifter to use? Does it have to be a cable shifter, or would a truck type shifter that bolts to the top of the tranny and uses rods have enough room?

I'm guessin' a cable shifter of some sort.

I am sure a cable shifter would work, but was wondering if the other style would work as well (trying to keep my options open when looking for deals) :)

I am not sure if I am going to go this route but I wanted to mount up a new column and use a column shifter in my cruiser. Would be nice for room and stuff.

I have had good luck with the B&M megashifter although its a little pricey.

I have not tried a lokar and dont' know how much room it takes

"lokar" shifters are sweet but I don't think I'd use 1 in a truck that takes a beating and it would suck to accidentaly "bump" it into the wrong gear a fawk your tranny up:eek: I use a B&M "Ratchet" shifter works sweet. Art Carr is nice to but $$$.....Go on EBAY and get a B&M.....can get good deals on them......Good Luck:D  :p

I have a B&M ratchet shifter in my CJ7. It is a quality product but if I had it to do over again I'd do something different. The ratchet style shifter is not condusive to shifting quickly from forward to reverse and vise versa. If I were to buy another shifter it would probably be an Art Carr although I wheeled in Moab with some guys from New Mexico that were running Lokars and really liked them. They are available in a couple different styles and mounting arrangements so I'm sure something would fit your application.

I also have a B&M ratchet shifter to my TH350 in my YJ. They are great except for the above mentioned Shift from Forward to Reverse...PITA especially if you need to do it quickly.

I have always liked column shifter off road myself, guess they are just easy to use that way.

Thanks for the tips guys - I will be sure to check out the shifter "ease of operation" before I decide what to use :)

Art Carr all the way.

Its gated like in a Mercedes.

Only requires one hand to operate.:D

I have the B&M megashifter for my TH350 in my YJ and i like it. But like everyone else said forward to reverse is kinda a PITA.

I also have a B&M megashifter. I like the ratchet style, but as mentioned above, the shifting form forward to reverse is odd. I plan on getting a reverse manual valve body so the I can shift from Reverse to 1st. I always shift by hand anyway, so it is great for me. Not sure on the price though.

Ditto on the B&M.
I was moving a parts rig with a ratchet shifter and no brakes at my place in CO.
All I am gonna say is I have a few fairly large cliffs on my land, I'm glad it was a parts rig, and thank god I didn't get to test the life insurance that day.
