I have an 81 CJ7 in my driveway that does not move when you let the clutch out because the output shaft of the trany snapped into two pieces :o I need to know what the trany is. It is not mine I am doing some work on the rear end but now I am replacing the trany or output shaft depending on what is cheaper and easier to find but I have no clue what it has for the trany so any ideas would be great, I have pics but no way to post them. It is a 4 speed and I am unsure if this is common but it looks like the thing had a stress crack and finally just went is this common? Thanks
P.S. if anyone has anything floating around they want to sell please email me @ stmclean@juno.com & I am going to cross post this in the Jeep section.

search the for sale section to see, lotsa stock stuff goes for super cheap as everyone here hates the stuff. they will post crap about your front 30 your trying to sell until you take it off in shame, cause its always 60s 60s 60s. now mogs, mogs, mogs. anyways, if the output shaft is in two pieces, makes you wonder about the condition of the internals, plus, its pretty fast to swap out stock trannies without too much worry. if you can't id it, maybe you shouldn't open it up to try and fix it. just go grab a replacement one for 150 bucks used somewhere. there are tons of boards to search too. have fun though, and good luck. (is money really an issue if its someone elses jeep?:) ;) )

Let me get this straight.....If I sign over my bronco to someone else, I can build it however I want and send the bill to that person :D

81 CJ four-speed might very well be a T-176 or 177. Very common four speed for that year.

Because I don't know what trany came stock in a Jeep by looks means that I am not qualified to fix it  I can tell a T18 NP435 by looks but not a T176 because I am not into Jeeps and if I was do you think I would care what a 176 looked like I think I would know what SM420's looked like because they are worth while. I could have tried to go to a trany shop but during the holiday season it is hard to find someplace open all of the Jeep guys I talked to said it is probably a T4 but it is not but thanks for the advise.

Yes money is an issue even more so than if it is mine because I am not 19 years old and I have some money in the bank I did not just blow my wad on putting a 9" in the back to replace the 20 and I am trying to help someone.

Thanks for the for sale idea but being this board is in California it is not cost effective and no on in WA locally has a trany so I have a T4 I am going to put in and all it will cost is a shorter rear driveline.

What do you want for the busted T5 maybe it is worth tearing them apart to see if they are the same.
Give me a call if you want 971-6510

The easiest way to tell is the the sr-4 (1981), t-4 and t-5 (82-86)trans. are two piece cases. You probably have a SR4 in the 81. The T-176 has a one piece case and they were in (80-86). If your guy is on a budget do him a favor and replace that junk sr-4 with a 176. It will look like a big expense at first, but rebuilding a junk sr4 and then replacing it later will be a bigger expense. (I rebuilt one for my 81 twice before learning.) The sr-4 will not hold up to a six let alone big tires or upgraded motor. If he already has a 176 you should be able to find a output fairly easy less than $100.

Steve,

Just wanted to let you know, that tranny you got from me is an SR-4 out of an '80 CJ with an I-6. Also, I'm 99% sure that the mainshafts are not interchangeable.

TJ it is a 176 I got two tranies today one is a T4 ( thanks John C) and it is working used so if all else fails I will be using it. The problem with the T4 is length. I also got a T5 ( thanks hip ) it is busted but the output looks like it may be the same except the splines are longer so with some trim work I might be able to adapt it to the 176 I will take some pictures and let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the help
Steve
