I have an 81 CJ7 in my driveway that does not move when you let the clutch out because the output shaft of the trany snapped into two pieces :o I need to know what the trany is. It is not mine I am doing some work on the rear end but now I am replacing the trany or output shaft depending on what is cheaper and easier to find but I have no clue what it has for the trany so any ideas would be great, I have pics but no way to post them. It is a 4 speed and I am unsure if this is common but it looks like the thing had a stress crack and finally just went is this common? Thanks
P.S. if anyone has anything floating around they want to sell please email me @ stmclean@juno.com

It's probably a t-4 these were standard issue in the early 80's

They're generally regarded as junk trannies. You can still find a few around here and there. Check the outer casing (aluminum) for bad cracks or rounded out surface areas around the bearing seats. If the case isn't shot you can maybe find another junk one and rob the shaft out of it. Also check with places like Mepco and four wheel hardware. They often have rebuilt ones or hard parts for rebuilding. If your ever going to use the Jeep for serious wheeling consider a stronger, better tranny such as a t-18. If it's only for the street and light four wheeling, a t-4 or t-5 will work but don't ever expect them to last forever.

Good luck

Thanks I would do a T-18 but the adapters cost $$$ so it will get a t-4 or t-5 are they interchangeable? The jeep might see a mile of trail a year so that is not a concern I have ford T18 in my Eb and love it but there is the money issue here.

i would go with a t-176 it is not as good as a t-18 but i ran one in my cj for a couple of years after blowing a t5 and a t4. it worked great in the rocks until i swapped it for the t-18 i run now. they are relatively cheap and will hold up well enough.
