the timing chain breaks. What years is this a problem on toy 4cyl's? If the chain breaks will it wipe out the valves.
Did a search and nothing came up using (piston, valve, clearance).

I think all of the 22R series are interference engines so you definitely have the possibility for valve damage.

When you pull the head, look for a little "smiles" on the top of the pistons. If there is one of more, the pistons hit valves. Whenmine broke there was a tiny little mark on #2 exhaust. Probably ok but I replaced the vale anyway. Cheap insurance.

This is correct.

All 75-80' 20R, 81-84' 22R, and 85-95' 22R non turbo engines will bend valves. Only 85-87' 22R Turbo (low compression) engines will not bend valves.
Depending on how fast the engine was running, will determine how serious the damage will be.
Rotate the engine untill the pistons are in the middle of the stroke, next turn the cam until both the intake and exhaust valves are closed (the lobes will be at 4 and 8 o-clock. Check the valve clearance of each rocker arm. If you find valves that are way out of adjustment, (very very loose), that valve is bent.
Pull the head and get it over with
