CMK, I tried to e-mail you, but no luck.

You mentioned you have no tailpipe on your TJ in a
recent post on this board. I about blew up my rig doing this, I was running muffler only (while building my 4-link), it completely melted the top of my gastank and the electrical wiring around my tail-lights, when (if) Photopoint comes back up, if you are interested, I can send you some pics. The exhaust gases and heat go directly to some very dangerous areas w/o a tailpipe.

I realize this is none of my business, but you seem like someone with some brains, and they're in pretty short supply. Just hoping to save you some possible problems . You may have other mods I don't know about that negates this problem.

It dont take much to turn the exhaust down.
This a part of the pipe I cut off.
It least now it's not into the shock or tank.
And nothing to rattle.

FYI, I cut my exhaust off between the cat and the muffler, and ran that way for about 10 days with no problems to speak of. I do remember seeing some pictures of a partially melted gas tank...that must have been yours. I suppose having the extra 18" or so from the muffler not being there gave enough air space for the fumes to ventilate. I even specifically checked the gas tank for any problems while I didn't have a muffler.

my $.02 I guess. I did a trail fix after ripping off the exhaust and had just the muffler comming off the cat and nothing else.(pointing basically at the axle/gast tank) on the 4 hour drive home it did melt the cheesey plastic cover that goes on the gas tank. It can happen, scared me enough to change it.

HB, thanks for the heads up man, I do appreciate it.

Yeah, my prodigy e-mail is down for a short while ... someone forgot to pay the bill. :dumbass:

I'll crawl under the Jeep and check it out today. Your problem makes sense. I only hope that my Tomken skid covers up high enough on the tank to protect it.

I did notice one other problem this weekend that I have been fearing for a while. When I cleaned the tank out, I wasn't able to get the sending unit retainer threaded on real well. It looked to be sealed, but apparently not.

As I was filling the tank this weekend, I continued to top it off to get to the elusive whole round number ($18) when I noticed gas pouring out of the back of my Jeep. Apparently, it's not sealed at all.

Having a glasspack that ends right in front of the tank and a line of cars waiting for my pump made it VERY interesting when I started it up.

So as I sit here typing to you from the depths of hell, might I recommend that people NOT do what I did.

I've got a Kilby on mine and it didn't help:nuke: :nuke:

If you keep your tank full a lot it probably helps (gas makes a good heat sink:D ), but mine did it when I almost ran out of gas(fumes explode better than liquid).

II just got through dealing with that myself, I found the biggest help is totally seperating the tank from the skid not just loosening the straps. I also don't have the special tool to tighten the retaining ring but I found a 4" long 1/4" socket extension and a hammer works much better then flathead and hammer as most recommend.

I found out too late, mud had entered the tank and gummed up the pump and filter.

Well, I just crawled under it and everything looks to be A-OK. The zip ties holding the tank to the skid/mount are thoroughly discolored from the exhaust, but the plastic tank isn't deformed/damaged in any way.

Got mine cut right behind the muffler too b/c of the 4-link, so far so good.

One thing I din't think about until I was in the situation was the fact that you better keep that engine running in deep water. W/o the hoop over the axle water can climb up to the engine much easier...

Well, Hellbender was definitely on to something here.

Just to paraphrase this post, I would like to say that I should probably be dead right now.

I pulled the tank down this weekend to rework my tank skid/mount and found a golf ball sized spot on the tank where the plastic has literally been peeled back from the heat of the exhaust. In that spot, all that's left keeping the gas in is probably a piece of plastic about the thickness of Saran Wrap ... needless to say, it's not a good thing. And yes, I am on a hunt for a new tank.

In the interim between now and when I rework the exhaust, I made a "deflector shield" that just deflects the exhaust gas down and away from the tank.

So, to summarize, watch those exhaust setups dudes.

we had a similar problem on a friends 4runner at JV. backing down a ledge his exaust caught a rock and his rear tire actualy backed over it. after pushing it down so he could drive back over it to bend it some what in the right place it was a little kinked to say the least. the hardware store hacksaw took care of that but on the way home :nuke: . the exaust was pointed at his spare tire and it blew apart going down the freeway. scared him a bit. on a side note my other friend has a suburban which he put a new mufler on with the exaust turned down after. the exaust was pointing to close to the axle which cooked a bearing and two seals before figuring it out. moral of the storys is: there is a reason you don't grab your exaust after a long drive, it gets faukn hot, so watch your routeing including shocks, wires, and fuel lines.
