: double shackle question

everything has thier pros and cons including the double shackle set up, ive seen a few mention the double shackle with a clip to keep the upper shackle against the frame. i would imagine this eliminates ALL cons of the double shackle compared to a regular single shackle , am i wrong? what other cons besides unloading are there and are they only present when the upper shackle is unlocked?

anyone got a link or any pics to this, i think this would be the best thing for me to do since i want to rock crawl with loads of flex but not have my springs unload.

i could just unlock the upper shackles when ever im hitting some rocks and keep it locked other wise

lets hear what ya got

i dont care if there loud or you think thier gay :flipoff2: , and i can lock them when going up or down hill. they would remain locked almost always just sometimes i think it would be better to have the option of more droop.

anyone else?

But seriously...why bother if they're always locked?

Get front & rear lockers and you won't have to worry about droop.

nope. You get hardly any contact pressure on the tire thats dropped. sometimes its good to have a tire in the air.

No, its not necessary to have them. You'll go places with or without it. And its not the worst thing that was ever invented....i don't even notice mine cept when it scissors and droops.

As far as i know, the only real reason that double shackles got popular is because on toyotas, its easy to just bolt your stock existing shackle to the chevy shackle on a 63" spring swap and do your front spring mounts and call it done after a few minutes of centering.

Of course thats why i did it and at least 3 other people i know did it.....if i'm way off base here then i guess i'm way offbase....but thats the general idea that i've gotten.

well if it helps any ill be running some super stiff thick inboarded springs, but with the inboard i dont know if ill really even have a use for them besides a ramp queen.

just hearing what everyones opinion is, any more actual users wanna reply?

i have run a double shackle setup in the rear of my rig for 2 years..

Pros, is pretty much the only way you can get annykind of extreem travle out of a leafspring setup.

Cons, has a tendiency to unload ,under heavy breaking, on steep inclines, and declines, and when you mash the skinny peadle tothe flor..

The con can be elimanated by adding a simple lock to the setup.
but then that would mean you would always have to stop on the trail, get out an lock, unlock..

heres a pic showing what happen to my setup the last time my rig was on the trail, and the reason why im dumping the double shackle leaf spring setup for a 3link quater ecliptic setup in the rear..

how the fawk did you accomplish that?

Mine couldn't possibly ever do that unless the front mounts broke...then i'd be worried about more than just shackles.

And if you're inboarding...there is absolutely no reason to use a double shackle in my opinion.

how the fawk did you accomplish that?

Take a close look at the pic.. notice the axle and 3/4 of the tire is under thick mud....

The shackles buckled when they tried to pull me out from the back. It was the first time i have had that happen, and i said it will be the last..

ive still got double shackles on my 4runner(im lazy). it exagerates axle wrap on climbs-theyre stupid but make you look kool on a ramp, thats it. if your gonna run leaf sprung rockwells with a double shackle you can expect double axle wrap:D

Honestly, EXO, i wouldn't even attempt double shackles.

I don't mind my double shackles cause theres an 8" toy under there...but with rockwells, i dont know if i would sling em under there along with em....especially if they're inboarded because they're gonna see alot of bind on the center bolt which will see alot of stress.

I'd stick to a regular shackle. You don't need a double shackle for an inboarded setup.
