: Hydro column steering wheel?
jeeplvr 01-12-2004, 10:51 AM I searched diligently but found nothing....
Where are you "buggy" guys, or anyone else for that matter, getting your quick release steering wheel setups that fit the forklift style hydro unit columns?
Is it a custom fab thing or can these be purchased?
I would settle for wheel only at this point.
Thanks.
Supergper 01-12-2004, 10:53 AM I ampretty sure you can get them through summitracing or form wilwood
welndmn 01-12-2004, 11:18 AM Correct, Just get a quick release hub for a GM or something from Summit then get a Valve to match it
jeeplvr 01-12-2004, 11:34 AM This spline is bigger than GM. It’s like a 1" in diameter shaft. I am going to check the Danfoss sight to see if they list the different spline counts for these columns.
I have a few steering wheels lying around with different splines and none of them are big enough.
Where's that Station character? :)
CJ Lagos 01-12-2004, 11:40 AM I have the service manual on my Parker Orbital Valve and they list part numbers of steering wheels that fit onto the different colums. They offer colums in a wide variety of lengths too.
Hope that helps,
CJ
jeeplvr 01-12-2004, 11:43 AM It would help if I had your manual?
CJ Lagos 01-12-2004, 11:47 AM Well I was thinking that maybe you could find a manual for your steering valve or talk to someone who does. I doubt mine would work for you :flipoff2:
Starslope 01-12-2004, 12:19 PM There are universial quick release systems that have no splined. You just weld them in place. Might sounds a bit risky but if you trust your welds... I bought mine at a local race shop. Much cheaper than the rest too ;)
Edit: Let me clarify: You do not weld it onto the splines. You weld it to a the splined part that comes with the column, often attached solidly to the steering wheel.
broncorob 01-12-2004, 12:24 PM I took a regular hub and ground it out to fit the column then welded them together
jeepmauler 01-12-2004, 12:35 PM I got my hub and spline from the annual season end race car swap meet for ten dollars. As starslope said you weld the splined part to your orbital shaft and the release hub attachs to your steering wheel. Sprint car shop is another good local source
Scott@Rockstomper 01-12-2004, 12:43 PM Just use a column that fits the orbital, and has a normal spline... then couple to that. :)

BillaVista 01-12-2004, 02:27 PM If shopping for parts - just about every hydro steering manu's catologue under the sun is available....well....you know where :)
Parker, eaton/Char-Lynn, Danfoss etc - they're all there.
I bought the custom adapter from station that has the standard GM 30 spline on it. You could mount the wheel to that, or if you want a colomnlike I did, you can buy a coupler from Speedway Motors.

PN#91032285 $14.95
(you could use u-joints instead)
I used an oversized steering colomn heim joint on a 3/4" shaft.
I then topped the colomn with one of these:

jeeplvr 01-14-2004, 02:18 PM Thanks for the replies.
I will search the local Summit Racing and see what they have that I can weld on.
That adapter looks good.
Scott does the quick release fit over the column spline and weld or does the column spline have to be turned down for it to fit?

Coupler fits column spline.
Other side of coupler has 3/4" bore.
Inside of QR has 3/4" bore.
Get a column, then a coupler, then add your own 3/4" rod or tube, then put the QR on the other end of that. I did that on mine, and put a 3/4" support heim in between, so that when I flip my junk, I'm not trying to twist the mounting plate for the orbital when I grab onto the wheel for support.
jeeplvr 01-14-2004, 04:14 PM Gotcha!
My hydro Static Steering unit was going to be mounted to the dash via your mounting bracket instead of remotely so I would have to mount my wheel directly to my column. I could move the HSS unit and do it the way you did but really don't have much room around the firewall.
