: 2.5L enhancement besides swapping out.
jeeperman 12-25-2001, 10:23 PM Do any of you guys have any experience with modifying the four squirrel special?
If so what works and what don't.
:) For any useful info...
:flipoff2: For all BS remarks about my choice of engines.

dorfs 12-26-2001, 04:55 AM Add 2 more squirrels? A bigger throttle body will help a little, at least at high altitude. Try this link.

could always put a supercharger on it, not cheapbut the only way to make a 4 banger have any hp
jeeperman 12-26-2001, 05:59 AM Thanks, I am looking into the larger TB suggestion now.
Don't want to spend the cash for SC but hope to get a little more power for the highway. The power it has is ok for the kind of off roading I do just want better road pref...
Sam :)
JEEP_TJ_FREAK 12-26-2001, 06:33 AM Jeeperman, If you have problems finding the big bore TBs let me know as I am about to make a trip to pickup some more. They are not a bolt on for TJs like it is for YJs (and that writeup) but its nothing you cant figure out. Some of the TBs I sold had a tab that would make it impossible to seal properly while all of the TBs had conflicts between the TPS and the 2.5L intake. Most of the TBs you can get in a junkyard will not have provsions for a MAP sensor. It will probably save some headache if you buy a spacer that fits both 2.5L and 4.0L TBs because it will space out all the conflicts so you won't have to grind your TB or intake and you can drill and tap it for the MAP sensor to be just below where it sits currently.
What year TJ do you have? I don't think anyone has calipered a 2.5L TJ TB that is newer then 2000 and there has been rumor that the newer ones already have the larger bore.
jeeperman 12-26-2001, 08:43 AM Mine is a 2001 model. I will have to check the TB diameter to see if it is the larger bore. Do you have the dimensions for the large bore?:)
JEEP_TJ_FREAK 12-26-2001, 09:06 AM No but I will in an hour.
I am at work right now. :(
jeeperman 12-26-2001, 09:18 AM No rush... I appreciate your help.
JEEP_TJ_FREAK 12-26-2001, 11:57 AM 2.186" or 55.5mm
that is measured from the bottom as is almost .3" larger at the entrance.
If you would while you pull yours to measure it. Check the ID of the intake hole for me.
jeeperman 12-26-2001, 12:09 PM Will do.
I will be doing some work on it this weekend so I will measure everything then.
Tonight I am putting some lift springs and other goodies on so I may not have time. The rest of the week will be dedicated to building up some bumpers for others.
Hope ya had a great Christmas and have a safe new year.
KAcrawler 12-26-2001, 12:49 PM i am a v8 man myself but my friend just got done with a supercharger install in his yj. he has 5.89's and 39X15 tsls and to tell the truth it is pretty quick and has admirable low end power. it was expensive though I think it ended up costing him around 4k and he did it himself. which to me means he could have had a crate 350 for the same price. just my 2 cents
borton 12-26-2001, 12:58 PM supercharger, stroker, and steroides for the squirles :flipoff2:

Your buddy took it in the @ss, there is a YJ driver around here who runs an Eaton M90 he claims it cost about $700 complete and self installed.
P&T Jeeps 12-27-2001, 07:38 AM Are the TB's really making that much of a difference. I'm sure it helps but it just dosn't seem its worth the cost.
Whats the real world say?

I only charge $40-$50 for them shipped and they almost bolt on for YJs they do bolt on . They do not make a radical difference but it is comparable to any other $40 performance mod like a K&N or flowmaster.
The engineers were not stupid if you look at the 2.5L output it is not too far away from the older 4.2L I6 it actually has more HP then all but the '71 258 and it is within 70 ft/lbs TQ of almost every 4.2L OE configuration.
Insayn 12-27-2001, 10:18 AM Just gear that Fawker lower. Spend the dough on axle gears (axle swap while your at it) and low range t case kit or Atlas II. :flipoff2:
P&T Jeeps 12-27-2001, 05:42 PM Sorry Freak, I was wondering about the performance for the I6. What got me thinking was that if it can help the I4 it should be even better for my I6, right? Any numbers on the gains that are real?

If you have a '97 4.0L then you already have the bigger TB that we are talking about, so you would see no difference other then being $40 broker. :D
Mieser 12-28-2001, 10:47 AM Biggest gain out there....
Make sure the gears in your axles are correct for the tires. This is the number one place to start! With 35s 5.13s work well with a manual trans. Then you might want to try...
-Keep it lighter! Don't carry lots of extra crap. Lighter bumpers, do you need a spare tire, keep it clean.
-simple motor mods. More air in, more air out, more fuel. An electric fan might help, heavyweight flywheel might help a little on the highway.
-Keep your tires aried up on the highway.
later :jeep:
P&T Jeeps 12-28-2001, 01:52 PM Ah, I thought you were refering to the bored out TB from Turbo City... nevermind then:D
wild1 12-28-2001, 04:31 PM k@n , thottle body and gears. The heavier flywheel is supposed to help a little. Havent tried one yet but thinking of it.
akafatguy 12-29-2001, 08:11 AM I am currently running 4:56's with my 2.5 with 33" tires. The combination works well. I have found that if I can keep the R's up on the freeway ( around 3k) I don't have near the problems I used to climbing the hills. Off-road I still want more (who dosen't?) In the future I will definitelyl be going to a 4:1 tcase.
