: Gun Freaks, anyone try this coating?
usmcdoc14 01-13-2004, 06:44 PM Brownells gunKote stuf (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=1150&title=GUN-KOTE?%20OVEN%20CURE,%20GUN%20FINISH)
http://www.brownells.com/Images/Products/083051001.jpg
the bluing on my 1911 is starting to wear a little and i would like a more durable coating. flat black/non reflective would be a nice touch also...you know for when i do my covert nieghbor's dog hunting missions :flipoff2: (kidding. those who know, know)
MikeW 01-13-2004, 06:50 PM It seems expensive, but however theres a bunch of choices there, which one will work for the packerized slide on my Walther P-1?

I would pay money to see Doc stalking the neighbors' dog in black BDU's and a set of NVG's, pistol in hand. :D

It would even be better if it was Slick Willy's dog, whoever replaced Buddy:flipoff2:

Now that's funny.:D
fullygruntled 01-13-2004, 07:05 PM I think the stuff works pretty well. I finished up a Stg-58 kit gun in it a few years back, the finish stood up well and was pretty quick and easy to do. The usual caveats about proper spraybomb technique apply. Make sure to degrease all parts well, and steal a few sets of latex gloves from work to handle the parts during the process. Make sure the area around the oven you're using is WELL VENTILATED... the stuff will stink the bejeezus out of the kitchen in a rented apartment and make the landlord knock on your door at 11pm to ask what the hell is going on. Ask me how I know ;)

they do sell the non-teflon stuff for like 10 bucks a can. hell they even sell it in a bake on "grippy" finish :D
I need to get bored and checker my front strap. but that can wait, i will just stick some grip tape on it.

i am doing a pistol so i think i will just get a cheap toast R' oven and do it on the porch.
My roomate still reminds me of my using the dishwasher for cleaning heads so i will thy and save face this time :D
Dustin Smith 01-13-2004, 07:09 PM That stuff is pretty good, but its far from pretty. I used it on a Savage single shot 12 gauge a few years ago, tough as nails, not much to look at.
What kinda 1911 you got? I just bought my very first 1911 yesterday, shot it today, and fell in love. Rock Isalnd GI model, 5", 250.00 out the door, New in Box...cannot wait to hotrod the hell out of it.

First thing I asked my Mom when she got a new dishwasher was if she thought a DOHC head would fit in it. :)
She said yes, it probably would.

Auto-Ordnance Compitition model. made a "melted" barrel bushing for it,polished feed ramp, these SAHWEEET aluminum grips, slight bevel/polish on mag well.
basicly a bunch more of tweaking to make it more of an actual combat weapon intead of a "comp" model :D it is quite a nice toy now
Dustin Smith 01-13-2004, 07:29 PM Auto Ordnance..wow, you are probably the first guy Ive seen to give them a good remark. In the 1911 world, however, there are a lot of gun snobs, and unless the rollmark on the slide says COLT, KIMBER, PARA-ORDNACE, or WILSON, it must be junk.

One Saturday about 20 years ago I was at a friend's place rebuilding a motorcycle engine. We used his parent's oven to bake the head/cylinders using KalGard Gun-Kote.
Worked great, but the next day was Thanksgiving.
We didn't think it would be so bad.
It was.
Aron82 01-14-2004, 02:02 AM UZI that is hilarious.
IT is a decent coating as far as spray on coatings go it is one of the best. You will want to let it dry for at least a week before you reassemble the pistol. This gives it time to cure and harden if it does not it will be more likely to scratch or wear.
InfantryYJ 01-14-2004, 05:12 AM Doc,...drive your happy ass down to Quantico, go to WTB, find the armory and say "Hey,....I need a favor",....ya never know,....they may be willing to build you a match grade .45

bb93yj 01-14-2004, 09:08 AM I've used the Kal Guard Gun Kote with great results. Did an old beat up Mossberg twenty years ago for a friend. Sandblasted the barrell, sanded the receiver to smooth up the nick's, degreased it with acetone, and handled it with cotton gloves after that.
Heat in an over at about 175* for about 30 minutes then take parts out and spray them with the Gun Kote out of a PreVal sprayer, back in the oven for an hour at about 350*.
He still has that old gun and it looks nearly as good as when I did it. That's a good thing, considering it rides around in the back of his Scout for the most part.
Gun Kote is also a very good topcoat over parkeriziing.
Only way you can get it off is to sandblast it back off.
Oh yeah, make sure your wife isn't going to be home for a couple of days to let the smell get gone, with all the windows in the house open.....it definitely has a "unique" aroma...
