how do I tell if a transfer is a three speed or four speed by looking at it. Its not attached to the tranny, but it may have came from a 73 production year sold as a 74.

Sure fire: Look at the input gear and if it has 10 splines, it is a 3sp; if it has 16 it is either a 2.3:1 ratio low gear 4 speed (aka, 3speed case) or a 1.99:1 4speed case. You can put it in L, spin the input gear and count the # of turns to tell whether it is 2.3 or 1.99 to 1.
